Not only did we give them open 3s without getting out there and putting a hand in their face, we stood by while they drove for easy layups. There were a couple times I noticed our defenders let the ballhandler drive right past them to the hoop without any effort to stop them because it wasn't their 'man' and they were late and on their way to match up with who they had; that's some lazy and low IQ basketball right there. And at the end of the game when we needed to foul we didn't have to quickness or athleticism to even catch the opponent to foul them.

RE: JMU WBB in WBIT Tournament 2024
I always pick JMU to win the whole thing in every basketball bracket. For my WBIT bracket, I picked the dukes over Stony Brook, but had them falling to a .500 Illinois team in the second round. I think that encapsulates my feelings about this year’s team and its inconsistencies.

The off-season is here. The portal is open. How many of the players are happy at JMU as it relates to basketball? A mass exodus would not be surprising.

There are a few I would hate to see go, but the portal giveth and taketh too. Perhaps a turnover is what is needed. Nothing personal against any particular person, but this is not the excellence long-time JMU wbb fans and supporters want. The folks who are defensive on here will say NCAA last year or we were the only SBC team to beat Marshall and yada yada, which is all true. But by and large, we don’t win big games anymore. It doesn’t mean it’s all bad or we are the worst or that we hate anyone or will stop rooting

JMU WBB in WBIT Tournament 2024
Last year we had a true point guard. This year we didn’t.

Stretches of undisciplined basketball where the team seems like they can’t get their footing. A good point guard and better coaching should fix that.

True, but where’s that going to come from?

Define "true point guard". Looks to me like we have two.

Germond.

30 turnovers against Marshall. And not just that game. A few games that i have watched it seems as if we dont have a true "floor general" presence.

Absolutely. A few years ago, we had Nikki Newman, maybe not a point, but knew how to distribute the ball.

This. We have the overall team size to give a lot of mid-major opponents fits, but the smaller, quicker squads could offset it. The high level mid major squads and blue bloods all have the size, speed and true floor general. It’s like we were one/two pieces away this season- true point and one more quick guard to defend or slash. We are the opposite of ODU; they lacked the size. Marshall did too, but they had the speed and shooters to negate any advantage we had. Put them up against a team with size and speed and a couple shooters - they folded like a cheap suit

It’s so crazy too. We were neck & neck with ODU in the conference standings, but we smacked them around both times. I guess teams just match up perfectly sometimes.

Germond was a good defender. The other two haven't been so far. They tend to play man to zone or Ole red cape defense.

RE: JMU WBB in WBIT Tournament 2024
Next year we basically return everyone plus the Marshall transfer guard who averaged 17+ ppg a season ago. Unfortunately the way Marshall plays, it takes the true PG out of the equation and makes your whole team take care of the ball - which we did not. I agree though that we did miss Germond’s floor presence this season.

Next years team should be an NCAA Tourney team though.

With the exception of the Marshall turnover fiasco, the issues were generally on the defensive end. The game against Stony Brook showed them specifically where they need to improve. They're not going to the Dance with defensive efforts like that.

Totally agree. I posted somewhere about 10 games into this season our defense is the reason we struggle.

The TOs were not all on the PGs. Get over yourself. Look at the box score before blaming it all on Chloe and Olivia.

The TOs were not all on the PGs. Look at the box scores. And of course we missed Germond, but quit looking backwards. It's now, not last year. Chloe especially is really growing into her role. She's only a sophomore! Plus, the person I asked has not defined a "true point guard".

And for as much as I like Coach O, there’s times when I’m just scratching my head and wondering how he, or any of his assistants on the bench, drop the ball and get outcoached time after time.
