Great observation. It is interesting to note that UMASS just so happens to be in the Hockey East.



There are six mens hockey conferences (Atlantic Hockey, Big Ten, ECAC, Hockey East, NCHC, WCHA). Three of these conferences also have womens hockey (ECAC, Hockey East, WCHA).

The ECAC is probably full at 12 M/W programs. WCHA is weaker league with a very scattered geo-footprint. That leaves the Hockey East. It is a logical conference to seek out if LU wants both M/W hockey to move up at the same time. There is an added benefit of the Hockey East being a stronger conference.
