This nails it. When the home team goes out in the first round, attendance will suck. The longer the home team advances, the bigger the crowd for them will be. That's true no matter where you play.

As to the crowd last night - Thursday night at 9 pm, first round game, you're just not going to get many people. There are not that many fans hardcore enough to take off work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for the tournament. The teams playing Wednesday are the teams which have had bad or disappointing seasons as well. It will get better day by day as teams advance and their fans decide to jump in.

Bottom line is that the conference is so large geographically that the only chance to have reasonably large crowds is to put the tournament in the middle somewhere.
