RE: The Official Pissing Match Thread: Why your school is the best BE expansion candidate
Temple:
- #4 TV market
- Fantastic academic school (I dont care what US News says), especially for graduate school (law, business, medicine, dentistry, podiatry, art, criminology)
- 37K students and growing. 2nd largest university in Pennsylvania (7K fewer students than Penn State, nearly 10K more students than Pitt)
-Nearly 270K living alumni, most of which are in the Philadelphia metro area, as well as other areas within the BE footprint like NY/NJ, Washington D.C., and Florida.
-Most diverse university in the country
-Largest computer center of an university in the country
-Recent campus and facilities additions include a $76.5M art school building, $80M business school building, and a multi-million dollar upgrade of our football weight room.
-On-going additions include a $50M renovation of our basketball facility, which will add practice courts for both women’s and men’s basketball teams, additional academic support facilities for student athletes, additional athletic facilities for students, restaurants, and retail space. This should be completed by next year.
-Future additions may include a renovated or brand new football practice facility with more space and an indoor facility in addition to our current outdoor facility. An on-campus stadium is within the realm of possibility, but will take 3-5 years to complete because of fund-raising, and political issues surrounding something of this magnitude in Philadelphia.
- Temple 20/20, a 10 year, $1.2 billion project to completely revamp our campus with brand new academic buildings, a new library, additional student housing to meet current and future demand, significantly more green space, new restaurants and businesses, potentially including a restaurant by internationally renowned Philadelphia restaurateur (and Temple alum), Stephen Starr.
- #6 all time in wins for a college basketball program behind only Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, and North Carolina
-#14 all time in winning %
-Tied with UConn, Marquette, Illinois, and Texas for #12 in NCAA Tournament appearances.
-Tied for #18 for women's NCAA Tournament appearances (can't find wins or winning percentage, but we're probably top 25-30)
-History with almost every current member of the BE
-Despite an overall football history that is not particularly stellar, we have had several notable players and coaches who have been successful at the next level.
-By all accounts, from media outlets across the country, we are a program on the rise and truly oozing with potential. We sit in a very fertile recruiting ground in South Jersey, and Eastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania, as well as a short drive from other recruiting areas like Central and North Jersey, Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
