Net Flix / no more dvds

I use their streaming and most of the time its money but the fact that unless they add A LOT OF MOVIES to streaming they should keep both types open for users.

If they don't improve their streaming options, someone else will. I wouldn't be concerned.

Boooooooooooooooooooo. Their DVD catalog was monsterous. Both the other catalogs pale in comparison.

Those had ALL better be two sided Blu-Rays with a DVD on the other side.

I think you might be missing the point here. They are still renting DVDs, you just can't add them to your queue from a streaming device. You'll have to use their website. I personally don't see why this is a big deal at all.

As long as they continue offering more and more (their whole catalog, ideally) through streaming, then there's no issue.

Here's an interesting commentary relevant to this topic from Couch Fire Sports, a WVU blog...

A Social Media Uproar

We all rely on social media to some extent… be it Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.. etc.

Netflix probably wishes that they had never heard of those sites today as an uproar is upon us.

Ya see… they decided to be greedy. While I understand the premise of their separation of plans into DVD and Streaming, I can’t justify the price hike of over 60%… because let’s face it… that’s unjustifiable.

The 60% price hike is a bit high.

Probably should keep the individual packages at $7.99, but offer a "bundled" package for $12.99.

In fact, don't be surprised if Netflix doesn't respond w/ some sort of compromise like this. Then they've gotten A LOT of free coverage for their products, and leave everyone w/ the impression that they're a company that cares. All while getting a 30% price hike (which is pretty hefty).

This could be a brilliant strategy.

Their shifting business model is ultimately at the whim of ISPs. They could be seeing the writing on the wall, and want to juice what they can while they still have the chance. However, I'd be catering to the consumers, and letting them bring the heat to the ISPs when/if they begin throttling Netflix streaming.

This article in CNN/Money makes it look like Netflix costs could increase by an order of magnitude in the next couple of years because of studio demands. Not too surprising that they're getting a head start. If that article is close to accurate and Netflix can't figure a way to find more agreeable terms, 60% is just a drop in the bucket.

It could also turn out to be one of the dumbest moves they've ever made. That depends on how upset their customers are, and whether or not new customers buy into it. If they lose too many customers, they may never recover...

I dumped streaming and went for a larger DVD plan for the same price. I only do DVDs really.
