hopefully, our JC recruit will be more like Corie Blount was than the countless other big men that didnt do much for UC. It will be interesting to see how GG progresses at SJU. The Johnson fellow that we lost from Huggins firing to Oregon or Oregon state revealed that great JC player wasn't that good.

Ivan Johnson iirc

Yep. Sounds almost exactly what Koch reported on...and was bashed about..simply because he's Koch. It's one thing to contigency recruit in case Ellis doesn't make grades. It's another to regularly force players off the team who are in good academic standing and were recruited in good faith by the current staff. Not sure we want that reputation and it sounds like maybe we were never comfortable taking that approach at all. The only times in the past 20+ years I can remember we did that....actually force a guy off to make room for another guy...was Aaron McGhee to make room for Dermar Johnson...and Tim Crowell after Mick's first year.

Tim Crowell knew it might be a one and done deal.

Aaron McGhee was a different story. Huggs instrumented that.

Yup Ivan Johnson went to Oregon....I checked his stats from time to time his first year and he never did anything...now, I confess I did not check his stats his second yr at Oregon(sr year) and I know a lot of juco's are much better their sr year so who knows how he ended up doing.

I remember coaches drooling over Ivan Johnson when he came out of JC. Goes to show that alot of them don't pan out in division 1.

Are you guys sure about Ivan Johnson being a complete bust?

I'm almost positive he started in his only year at Oregon and averaged... (I'm totally guessing here) around 8 pts 5/6 rebounds per game....?

He scored 7 or 8 a game and 3 or 4 fouls in about 15 minutes a game. He also got suspended twice in his one year there before getting booted for being a head case and giant headache. I'd say that classifies as a bust.

Thanks. I couldn't really remember all the details about him. I only watched him play once at Oregon against Cal or UCLA or something. I just remembered that he was a starter for them and seemed to average in that 8 point / 5-6 rebound department.

I never knew about all his off-court issues.

He averaged 7.5 pts; 3.2 reb; 3.0 pf and 16.1 minutes over 28 games in his first season at Oregon. I think he played in one game the next year before parting ways with Oregon.

FWIW, he played in 3 D League games last year and put up some numbers, averaging: 23 points, 9 rebs, 3 assists, 5.3 fouls in 37 minutes per game. This site also lists him as the #9 prospect in the D League although I'm not sure of when the rankings were done.

Ivan Johnson
