Funny why don't you blame the Card fan for starting all this mess by saying he didn't see any difference in East Carolina and Eastern Kentucky. You know I couldn't just let that ignorance slide with out a response.

Favorites

1. Memphis - My alma mater
2. WVU - Life long favorite
3. Marshall - Unlike most WVU fans, I like the Herd also (went to many games at old Fairfield Stadium)
4. UK - Mother graduated from there
5. USM - Respect period
6. ECU - Conference mate and fans depise the ACC as much as I do

Love/hate
1. Pitt - Conference mate with the mounties and respected rival
2. UC - Respect as old conference foe of Memphis (jealous of current status)
3. UofL - Even as a Memphis fan, have respect (jealous of current status)

Totally Dislike

1. VT - No need to comment
2. Ole Miss - Have only one thing going for them - They are in the $EC
3. UT - Like the Yankees, Braves and Cowboys (you either love 'em or hate 'em)
4. ND - Just do
5. The entire ACC except Wake and the rest of the $EC bar UK

For one there are very few schools period competing with those NC Schools like Wake, Duke and UNC you mentioned. They are on another level granted, and I never compared our academics to them, but on a national scale ECU has a lot to be proud of I think, and also in the state of NC where there are like 10 or 12 state institutions so that says a lot as well. ***Charlotte likes to think they are big time and they seem to be MIA on that list and can't even field a football team in a city of that size.

Also it would be hard to be on the Extensive list with universities like UNC and NCSU dominating all the main programs of the state and top students. It is set up so many of our best students actually go on to UNC's doctoral programs after they graduate ECU instead of stay at ECU. UNC has the best Doctoral programs in the state and are one of the top 3 or 4 public universities in America. It is very understand why they leave ECU even though the PHD's we offer are comparable to many state flagship universities as well. NC has a very strong university system.

UNC has very good everything. NCSU is a great engineering school, ECU has a great medical school. (#4 in rural medication and #32 in family med, we have a great cardiovascular center as well. One of President Clinton's heart doctor was from ECU and one of our doctors was pursued by Harvard). I think Medical schools are actually the most expensive but I could be wrong on that.

You are wrong about funding, UNC hogs the funding by a long shot. NCSU has more students by several thousand and receives less funding. UNC gets the most despite having centuries of endowments to live on being the oldest public university in America. ECU has to fight for every program they get and the funding crumbs that trickle down. We have wanted engineering for years but the NC board denied it until a couple of years ago because that is NCST's thing. They actually caved and we have undergrad engineering now.

BTW I am done with the ECU talk and defending us, this is way off topic, but with 60, post you can expect it to get off some especially when the post it self is designed for people to take shots at others schools.) Notice on my first post I said I probably shouldn't be over here but I was lurking and thought it was a pretty cool topic.

No hard feelings anyone I hope one day our icon can be on this board.

Maybe it is subjective but that is like the bible students follow when they choose schools. Kind of sad, they need some more sources of info.

good thread.

5 teams I tend to cheer for when they aren't playing WVU, in no particular order:

Louisville
East Carolina
UCONN
Colorado State
Kansas State

5 teams that make me smile when they lose:

VPI
BC
MoooooShall
Miami
Maryland

Pitt, Penn State and Syracuse.... our historic rivals. I hate them when we play them, but wish them well the rest of the time. Same w/ the other NBE members.

04-cheers

I have gone to college at both West Virginia and Buffalo, and am enrolled at WVU again and planning on graduating from here so i will omit the Mountaineers as i plan to be an alum in a few years.

Teams i love:
1. University at Buffalo Bulls -- What can i say, i went there for a year and bonded with the sports teams...no matter how bad, i went there and rooted for them in a stadium with 4,000 (31,000 capacity) people. I follow them, plan on making trips back for games, both football and basketball. I will be there when they turn it around, outside of WVU my favorite teams, bar none.

2. Colorado State University Rams -- Top three choice of schools at the time when i was applying to school, i started following them because i was considering going there...talented group of players named Bradlee Van Pelt, Cecil Sapp, Dexter Wynn and Joel Dreessen made me a fan. Outstanding program they run out there, quality coach in Sonny Lubick, very underated and classy program.

3. University of Minneosota Golden Gophers -- Not sure, but i always seem to root for them, outside of the above mentioned teams, i love watching there games and always hope for them to succeed, friend of mine goes there, that helps.

4. University of Louisville Cardinals -- Ever since Dave Ragone ive enjoyed watching the cards on TV, especially when they played against Kentucky and that 300LB joke of a QB Jared Lorenzen. Sorry Kentucky fans, i couldnt stand watching him play. Now that they are conference members, all the better.

5. Washington State University Cougars -- Cant explain this one. I just like them, and ever since my Jets drafted Erik Coleman, i love WSU.

Teams I Hate: (i will not include reasons because I hate them, and because I could right a page reason for each school.

1. VPI (Virginia Tech)
2. Boston College
3. University of Michigan
4. University of Notre Dame
5. THE Ohio State University

oh yea...F*ck PITT :D

I don't know about the tier rankings used by US News and World Report. However, the University of Cincinnati was always classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research One University when that classification was used. That meant that UC was in the top two percent of universities in the nation as far as research funding. The categories of Research One, Research II, Doctoral I and Doctoral II are no longer used but have now been replaced with more broad and inclusive categories. Research Extensive University is now the top category and UC is in that category as well. Under the Research One category, the only universities in Ohio receiving that distinction were UC and Ohio State.

In other words, the University of Cincinnati is a major research university offering around 80 doctoral programs ranging from medicine to the social and behavioral sciences. It is one of the top two universities in Ohio as far as the number of doctoral degrees offered and the amount of research funding received.

...actually, I was dead on about the funding. I was talking about engineering specifically. I know ECU has wanted to further engineering on their campus and NCSU has fought it tooth-and-nail.

With the exception of my beloved BEARCATS, the 5 teams I like to root for are as follows:

1. Louisville: I like to see the Cards do well unless they're playing Cincy.
2. West Virginia: Big East school
3. Syracuse: Big East school
4. Penn State: I always liked them. But I hate the Big Ten.
5. Tulane: Great baseball now.

The five teams I hate are as follows:

2. Kentucky: see above.
3. Xavier: Your fiften minutes of fame are over!
4. Duke: Need I say anymore?
5. North Carolina: That says it all.

Go Bearcats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I think most people know UNC is pretty decorated academically, they really don't need me to pump them up nor do I care to. I think most people know if ECU makes that classification and ranks pretty decent, UNC is probably at the top or near the top just by the fact we do not have the funding and history they do, same with NC State. The only reason I even brought up any of those rankings was to counter the misconception that we are at the same level as Eastern Kentucky. I would prefer not to even mention UNC and NCSU unless I must and I didn't see the need their.

ECU fans just want everything we have worked so hard for to be respected, and when someone compares us to Eastern Kentucky who are no where in the rankings and do not even feild a D1a football team it is very insulting. I really think many average national fans look at the name East Carolina and get that impression. It is frustrating, but that is part of the chip that comes with being a pirate and what keeps us pushing to prove and improve ourselves.

I hope that clears it up.

I feel your pain to be honest. Rutgers has seen its state funding decline from 65% to 48% in the last 15 to 20 years. If it wasn't for very creative and very two-way partnerships with corporations, innovative funding ideas, and generous alumni we would be withering away. You think NJ would look to the rise of UConn because of CT's investment in UConn and emulate it and with the headstart we still have on UConn and the Rutgers name we could easily be on the same level as UNC-CH, UM-Ann Arbor, and Cal-Berkeley (sp?). We are a Public Ivy but we should be better than we are. Its the whole culture of this state in its self-loathing populace and going out of state for school because our schools can't possibly be any good. At least Schiano has a shot at changing that in Football recruiting and that may help turn the tide in Academic Recruting as well.

(1) Southern Cal I lived on the West coast of Oregon until I was 10, visited L.A. often, and my older cousins were USC students. This was my school of choice, but after relocating to Florida, the 'rents would not help me with school if I moved out West again!!

(2) Ohio State Can I use this? Negotiated w/ the 'rents and chose Ohio State (closer to them in FL). One semester. Classes I wanted were full. Couldn't reaclimate to the cold weather. My car window got smashed in and robbed (they warn you during orientation that $2MIL of student auto-thefts yearly) -- and my FL ex-girlfriend suprised me the same day of the the theft and flew up. I was P.O.'ed, and packed my stuff and split back to FL the same day. Still loved the OSU partyin' :)

(3)Marshall No idea really. Maybe because they are the closest thing UCF has to "rival", albiet just 3 years -- and 3 UCF losses. MAC ties, moving to CUSA together.

(4)Oregon See #1. Born in Eugene, OR. Home of the Ducks. Dad is alum.

(5)Utah Ski Utah/Colorado annually, unless I'm broke. Grandpa owned a sweet highrise condo overlooking the Utah football field. He's never there, but would always let me crash for free and so I'd socialize in Salt Lake alot, instead of getting stuck hangin' w/ BYU students playing pictionary. FWIW, always got a kick of Utah students dressing up in ties at games to mock BYU.

SOB's

(1) Kentucky UK fans breed like chickens... Louisville needs to build a moat.

(2)Florida Big-mouthed cocky fans, for being hands down the 3rd best in the STATE. Sing w/ me now... O-ver-rat-ed.

(3)West Virginia I respect the program, but they talk much smack that they don't back re Marshall.

(4)Michigan Ohio State

(5)South Florida Same situation as WVU, except I don't respect 'em yet. Dodging UCF, and opting to play _multiple_ I-AA -- even when UCF publicly offered to play at Ray Jay. I can't get over that; the game is a natural cash cow for both schools, and choosing I-AA is just pure ******. Then, they get the BE invite; yep, some spite there. And, cuz of their Ugly Fat Pimply Girls w/ daisy dukes.

I totally like:

1) Wisconsin- My home away from home. I've grown enamored with the program and Bo Ryan
2) Georgetown - Been a Hoya fan since the days of 'Zo and Dikembe.
3) Michigan St.- Mateen's magic made me a fan, pre-title.
4) Cal- From Lamond Murray and Jason Kidd to Shariff to Geno Carlisle to Leon Powe.
5) Dayton- Hate to play 'em (I'm a UC fan), but I love Brian Gregory.

I totally don't like, in no order. Well put #3 at #1.

1) Louisville- I hate playing them. Respect the hell out of 'em, but they're always tough.
2) FSU - While I like they're football team, I hate the basketball team. Always stealing our recruits.
3) OSU- Coming from a UC fan, this is understandable
4) UCLA- Ended a sweet 01-02 campaign for the 'Cats.
5) UK- Where do I start?
6) Michigan- Ditto.

Dislike

1. Wisconsin. Second most obnoxious fans in the country. Yes, they have hit their athletic glory in the past few years, but they are a traditional doormat. Football and Basketball histories are among the worst in the Big 10. Between 10-15 % of their football players have been arrested since 2000 ( the actual number is approaching 30). Second on the major rules infraction list.

2. ND. Most obnoxious fans. Although, since I am in Wisconsin, there are less of them than UW fans, so I moved them down to second.

3. Remaining CUSA schools. They don't appreciate the obvious, that the conference is horrible. Yes, some of the schools have history, but few have a present. The CFL outdraws CUSA. The league members have some kind of bond that causes them to go on jealous rampages about the BE. The best part about MU joining the BE, is leaving CUSA. I pray that MU will never ever be subjected to going to Hattiesburg again.

4. Xavier, Dayton and SLU. Don't like them. Don't really know why. Maybe I still pissed the Marquette joined the crappy MCC with these schools putting them in a hole that they haven't pulled themselves out of. That said, I don't feel the same about Detroit or Loyola, too other MCC schools.

5. Illinois. One decent run in 15 years doesn't make you Duke. As I pointed out in point 4, MU is still not where it was, even after a final four run. Illinois has never even approached MU's prior level. BTW, no one really wants to live in central Illinois.

Like

1. Anyone playing Wisconsin

2. Anyone playing ND

3. Iowa and Iowa State. Spent time in Iowa

4. Vanderbilt. Went there for a year.

5. Underdogs. Except for CUSA teams (Although, I don't have the animosity towards the new schools with the exception of maybe Marshall. Boy, their fans seem over the edge.) I like cheering for teams in the minor conferences.
