We change the bulbs to incandescents all over the house in October and then back to LED in the spring.

Most LED bulbs I agree, but the Cree bulbs look exactly the same as incandescent to me.

To you're eye but the spectrum is not the same... If you has SAD you would know the difference.

It's like digital versus analog Music... You can get damn close but at the end of the day the spectrum is not smooth...

What is SAD?

....the way I feel when when I have a flat tire on my car? 03-cloud9 (couldn't resist)

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/seasona...er/DS00195

Quote:Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year. If you're like most people with seasonal affective disorder, your symptoms start in the fall and may continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody. Less often, seasonal affective disorder causes depression in the spring or early summer.

Treatment for seasonal affective disorder includes light therapy (phototherapy), psychotherapy and medications. Don't brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the "winter blues" or a seasonal funk that you have to tough out on your own. Take steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year.

If you want to use them, horses and quills aren't banned.

Are quills and ink or parchment or a horse illegal?

I find it kind of cool to write with fountain pens... which aren't quite quills and ink, but far closer than modern gels. The ink actually settles into the paper rather than laying upon it.

I certainly ride horses when I can

There's a difference between advancing technology and outlawing preferences.

Anything looks smooth at a low enough resoultion.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. If you look at the CFL distribution, you see clearly the effects of light that is given off at specific light frequencies - these are due to specific quantum transitions in the gas used in CFL bulbs ... I believe there is a mixture of gasses that go through about 3-4 transition states each, thus each gas would be responsible for 2-4 frequencies of light at different amplitudes.

The LED light gives off one primary frequency (blue, and that's the one spike that you see), but the bulk of the light that is measured does a good job of mimicking black-body radiation, which is the smooth part of the curve.

None of that is really obscured by the resolution of the graph, unless they've manipulated it unreasonably.

Here is an image with the RGB LED frequencies, along with another one showing Blue LED with phosphor (aka White LED).

Quote:I expected a spiky distribution like CFLs do. Both CFL and LED lights work by exploiting quantum mechanics and emitting a discrete (set) of light frequencies. I think both smooth out the frequency distribution by using phosphorous to essentially absorb and re-emit the light (see the second image for examples of light that would show up as spikes on the chart, if they were included).

It's a lot less peaky than I expected but if you increse your resolution it will look somewhat digital.

Quote:SAD is Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it looks to me that the LED actually mimics sunlight better than incandescent lights, but there may be something about the spike in blue light (edit) valley in blue/green spectrum that could tend to screw people up.

Well don't think I was saying a reqular old 100W bulb is the perfect solution just that it's better than CFL's and in my experience a *bit* better than LEDs (maybe its the skew, I don't pretend to know why)

I think that CFL's (or the plain old fluorescents, which were the problem when I first heard all of this talked about 25 years ago) have to be the worst light source. I like the aesthetics of LED light just as well as the reveal, but I don't have them in an area where they'd affect me for more than maybe 1/2 hour at a time.

Leaded paint did paint well. Would think that some would want that
back so they do not have to wear those silly tin foil hates to protect
themselves from aliens.

Yes, because incandescent light bulbs lead to the advent of the nightclub, which in turn led to more procreation. QED.

I don't understand how someone's sexual preference is 0% of my business and 100% of my financial responsibility.

Talked w/ civil engineers last week. You're right, Pb paint did coat better, kept corrosion down better. That means when a bridge collapses, and people die, it's b/c of banned lead paint.

How many people have died from incandescent bulbs?

Oh, and you used to blame energy companies on AGW skepticism, yet you don't acknowledge that GE is making a fortune from CFLs and is the primary driver behind banning incandescents.
