You sure that Boise would be better of merged into the University of Idaho? I think you'd see the Moscow campus be the one that survives, and only because of the seniority it has over Boise.
I haven't had much to comment on(really, nothing) with the forthcoming school crunch, but I think all of you are missing out on this fact: online education can not only be personalized, but available on a scale that even schools like Ohio State and UCF would be in awe of. If it ever takes off to a degree that it will render 90% of all physical campuses worthless, I definitely could see states as large as Ohio going with one actual campus, and even states like California could use just 2; every thing else would be online. Schools like Ohio, Houston, USF, any of the UC and Cal State campuses will, IMO, vanish within 20 years.
What would all this mean for athletics, I think that we maybe seeing the first death throes of the college sports culture in this country. Which in turn, will eventually lead to the end of the success of the Big 4(or 5 depending on whether or not you consider MLS to be big), unless the model for minor league sports becomes more lucrative than the college sports model it will have to replace.
There will also be a place for the traditional campus experience, it will just be a smaller part of the picture. Certifications will replace many of the degrees people seek today.
