BEGGARS CAN'T BE CHOOSERS

It's weird how that works. Roofs on new stadiums are not incredibly expensive, and the difference in cost between a fixed roof and a retractable one is "only" about $20 million, which is small potatoes for most of these projects. But when you try to retrofit them on to stadiums not designed for a roof, the cost can be upwards of $200 million.

A retractable roof on a new stadium only costs $20M? I'm skeptical.

Are they going to reduce the seating capacity so they don't have to use tarps during Hurricane games?

Sun Life Stadium, which can now accommodate 76,000 for football, will plunge in capacity beginning next season to 66,000 (for the Dolphins) and about 55,000 (for UM, according to the school), because of stadium modernization that will put some seats closer to the field and eliminate others.

UM’s decision against selling upper level end zone season tickets accounts for the difference, though additional seats could be opened for select games if UM wishes.

They're reducing capacity by 10,000 and still using tarps.

After two months of demolition, seats are no longer coming out of Sun Life Stadium. The bright aqua chairs are now going in.

Construction crews last week put in the brackets for the first of some 65,000 seats — a process that cannot take more than five months.

Work on the stadium’s seating bowl has to be done in time for the Dolphins’ first home preseason game. ... the team is guaranteed to have a home game no later than Aug. 30. The University of Miami will open its season at Sun Life the following Saturday.

You know, if they really want to make home games look good, maybe they should install seat backs with pictures of fans already painted on them...

I thought Miami was getting a new stadium to share with Beckham? If so, who cares about the Dolphins' stadium?

UM and Beckham face a significant hurdle: the Miami Dolphins.

Shalala recently lamented the football team having to play games at Sun Life Stadium. But leaving the program’s home since 2008 could be costly. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has signaled his intent to hold the Hurricanes to the remaining 17 years on their lease at the stadium, which is undergoing renovations that were part of a county subsidy deal approved last year.

One option might be to cut a deal whereby the Hurricanes play one or two big games at Sun Life per season — for example, the game against Florida State, which typically draws near-sellout crowds.
