I'd love to agree about cleaning house. Frankly we don't have the resources to buy out Flood and make a major hire. Without a proven name coming in to coach, would loose this recruiting class and probably the next. Once that happens, we essentially become Illinois. That being said, our O line can't block, our D can't tackle and our QB can't throw. I was at PSU the last time we played there. This team looks a lot like that one.
I can understand that thinking if Rutgers was still in the AAC. But, can't Rutgers use the Big Ten/BTN TV money to do this?
Rutgers doesn't start getting its full share of the B1G money until 2021. Until then, the Univ President is putting a lot of pressure on Athletics to reduce costs and the share of the Athletics budget that depends upon student fees. Rutgers remains a cheapskate for at least the next 5 years.
Ouch. I did not know that. That certainly limits the choices.
We get an increasing payout each year and towards the end the money becomes pretty darn huge. I'm not sure we're still cheapskates for at least the next 5 years, but certainly for the next 2 to 3 years.

What does Flood's contract look like? How much money and how long?

Buying out Flood isn't really an issue, its being able to spend enough to get a desirable candidate.
I believe we'd owe Flood around $1.2 Mill at this point.

I think RU would be on the hook for $700K, a donor has covered the remainder. However, like he said, we don't have the desire at this point to spend what it would actually take to get someone worthwhile.

I gotcha now. I'm sure some (many) fans are disappointed that this probably won't happen. But look at the silver lining, you can save up for next year and not have to go up against all the schools that seem to be getting rid of coaches this year! You should have much better options and few challenges next year.
I personally and somewhat nervous about Maryland's coaching search. There are something like 7 schools already that are in official coaching search mode. Throw in potential other schools like VT, UVA Purdue, 'Cuse…it is going to cost A LOT of money to get the coach we want.

There won't be any money next year. There never will be. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.
Rutgers is at 31,000 season ticket holders right now. I guarantee you they won't be at 31K next year if Flood is still here. Oh well Rutgers administration won't care because they can count on Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. fans to buy tickets for those games.

Unfortunately, for both of your schools, the BIG 10 expects you to win non-conference games and be the punching bags for PSU, Ohio State, MSU and Michigan. Don't upset the carefully arranged apple cart.

The Wisconsin game felt like a Terry Shea-era game. Rutgers was uncompetitive from the outset. This is demoralizing.

Yeah, I don't really remember the Shea era since I was a) an ignorant HS kid and then b) a Rutgers student with a mother dying from cancer, but I can understand that. Didn't think we had a chance before the game started and while I had the game on the TV and the radio broadcast on, I was just numb to the whole experience.

I beg to differ. There must be thousands of Flood fans all across the B1G at this point, in places like State College, Ann Arbor, Columbus...the list goes on and on.
