RE: Coaching Carousel
Herman, Smart, the USF coach and Rich Rod all got offers. They had to wait until after midnight of the SEC title game before they could offer Muschamp since he would have had to pay a million dollars.
Smart had the UGA job that opened so he went there. Otherwise he may have ended up at South Carolina.

They may have been asked for an interview, but they most assuredly didn't all get offers. Herman took himself off the market fairly early. I haven't heard a word about the USF coach being pursued, but it is certainly to his advantage if people think so. I think they had their sights on Smart, interviewed Rich Rod by phone when Kirby went to Georgia, and took Muschamp as their last resort. That is really all they would have had time to do if they had been waiting on Smart. Richt's decision (from announcement to hiring at Miami) was pretty much bang bang as this business goes.

Well, he is a Mormon.
Maybe if my idea for a smashing, Polynesian Rugby type team didn't work out at Hawaii ... Niumatalolo can make it work at BYU, piping in Mormons from the Pacific Islands.

Word I'm getting is Taggart did not get an offer. There was some courtship but it was the coaching search equivalent of introducing yourself to the chick at the end of the bar.
Supposedly Herman was offered but they pulled the offer when he dallied around with a decision.
Smart they missed on, plain and simple. UGA pulled the rug out from under them on that.
I'm also hearing that this is going to be the "make it or break it" hire of Ray Tanner's career. His hand picked successor for baseball is floundering and the fact that Tanner bears a lot of responsibility for how the Spurrier situation went down this year after talking him into coming back for one more year are already two strikes. His two baseball titles and the fact that both basketball programs are doing pretty good at the moment are helping him but facts are facts and football rules the roost in Columbia.

You could have just said football rules the roost in South Carolina period. Clemson fans love their pigskin too!

You don't make multiple offers for a HC job. You make them one at a time until they either get accepted, rejected, or expire. They may have all interviewed, but no way did they all get offers.

Is it just me, but it seems that this year fewer openings have been filled by existing head coaches? If y'all see that too, why do you think that's the case?

I thik that's more because of two reasons: buyouts, and timing. Lots of openings prior to the end of the regular season meant schools out there interviewing during the season, meaning sitting HCs may be waiting until the end of the season to look around.
Also this year, the winter dead period is 30 days long from Dec. 14 to Jan. 13. That has programs scrambling to hire before it hits to try to get started recruiting before having a mandatory month off.

Depending on how you count Richt it's either the same or one more than the number of existing head coaches that filled jobs last year.

true. but look at the # of openings. 2015 has had 22 openings, compared to only 15 last year. So 4/22 a lot different than 4/15.

RE: Coaching Carousel
It appears/feels to be different because there have been zero P5 moves yet....P5 head coach to a P5 school. Richt was fired from UGA so he didn't leave UGA to go to Miami. If he didn't get fired from UGA, he would still be at UGA.

RE: Coaching Carousel
The NFL firing period will be here soon. Don't know if the NFL is going to hire a head coach out of the college ranks this year so I doubt there will be any new big moves.
Maybe an NFL team finally offers the ND coach a job? Doubt it, but his goal is to get to the NFL as a head coach.
The Eagles are keeping Chip Kelly.

You also have to consider that of the P5 jobs (where you get almost all the existing coach hires) that the Southern Cal, Missouri, Minnesota, and Illinois jobs didn't open because of performance related issues thus it makes sense for the continuity hires for them.....except maybe Illinois and the AD issue is the reason behind the Cubit hiring.

@JordanStrack
Source tells me that BGSU will name Mike Jinks as their head football coach. He was previously the RB coach at Texas Tech.

He's waiting until after the Liberty Bowl to make a decision.
