Pearl Washington, Dead at 52
He was the player that turned Syracuse from a regional power into a national power. The first great Orangeman to light up the Carrier Dome.

He fought the courageous fight but Cancer took him from us way too early.

Pearl you will be missed for being a great ball player but also a great human being. RIP

There is one thing we can all agree on to cheer for - a cure for cancer. Much, much to young to go at 52; RIP Pearl.

RE: Pearl Washington, Dead at 52
Sorry to hear of his passing. Those were some fun years of Big East hoops, 84 to 86. He was on the team that replaced the Rautins-Santifer-Bruin threesome, and it was his team from the start. The 84 and 86 BET Finals were a couple of the best games i ever watched.

Cool to see those old clips. Gary Williams was the BC coach on Pearl's half court shot. Also, at the 1:20 mark of the 2nd video you can see a young and still pudgy Billy Donovan on Providence. Howard Triche is in a highlight (Brandon's uncle), noticed #55 Sean Kerins, Andre Hawkins, Addison and Alexis. I forgot the Carrier Dome had that weird floor back then... it wasn't wood, more like a hard rubber that hurt players' knees. And the highlights at Villanova were from the Palestra back then.

But man, Pearl was amazing. A walking highlight reel. Had such great balance with his low center of gravity, kinda like Warren Moon. Was nicknamed after Earl Monroe.

Certainly brings back memories of my youth. Pearl, Addison, and Seikaly made some great runs. Makes me sad.

Yes, Ken Burns called cancer "the Emperor of all Maladies", and he's right.

Really poignant for me because Pearl was just 52, my age, and I remember how invincible he looked at 20, like I felt.

RE: Pearl Washington, Dead at 52
Chris Mullin, St. John’s University Head Men’s Basketball Coach:
“Pearl Washington was one of the fiercest competitors I ever faced and such a wonderful gentleman who will truly be missed. He will always be remembered as one of the all-time great players in New York City basketball history. There are so many fond memories that I have of Pearl from our time growing up in Brooklyn and then as BIG EAST rivals, but what stands out most was his genuine and caring nature. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pearl’s family and friends.”

Added by me:
After 30 years, many of the Big East legends are still with us, except for Gavitt and Pearl. I think the only 2 coaches from the 80's who have passed away are Joe Mullaney and Dr Roy Chipman. Not sure if Hoddy Mahon is still alive
