Not even into October yet and they're already irrelevant. No conference title to chase after either. The money is nice but they need to join a major conference soon. I'm sure their other sports enjoy playing games with, at best, FCS caliber foes also (yes, even Gonzaga. At best they're a Butler or Georgetown).

Sorry but Gonzaga isn't a FCS caliber foe in men's basketball. They are a perennial top 25 team and everyone knows it.

Not that a Houston fan knows a damn thing about basketball.

5 Final Fours and all. Anyways, my point was that the Zags can compete nationally in men's basketball but are still a sub-FBS level athletic program and school. I mean, they're more big time than half the Sun Belt and MAC but that's about it. And we'll see what things are like when Few moves on.

I don't see how BYU would want to play in a conference of small church schools, including Gonzaga.

They are about 4 or 5 plays from being undefeated.

and 1 play away from being 0-4.

BYU better be careful or they won't be bowl eligible. They still have road games with Mich St, Boise, and Cincy, and a home game with Miss St. 6 losses may be very realistic, if not likely.

They are going to struggled with Toledo on Friday night. Especially with Toledo having the bye this week.

BYU just isn't all that. In the 20 season period now from 1997-2016- BYU has lost at least 2 games every single years. Since they won the title in 1984, they've had 1 year with 0 or 1 loss. So it's been a real long time since they have been relevant at all.

To hear them say it? Wonderful! Wouldn't trade it for anything! Unless the big 12 might possibly have an opening..then it would: where do we sign up?
Cheers!

For BYU, independence is the best option if they can't join the Big XII as a full member. They won't be back in the MWC nor they consider the American because of one reason only: the University of Utah. They won't concede Utah is the big boy now so they have at least to pretend they're on their level by playing multiple P5 schools a year even if they're automatically disqualified for a major bowl by the third game.

Colorado's improvement is bad news for BYU. BYU has to beat Utah before Colorado vs Utah turns into a more important rivalry. CU knocked Utah out of the PAC CCG in 2011, and UUvCU could heat up substantially if PAC south titles start to come into play.

Why would BYU give up independence, they have a stacked schedule and for them it's better overall. Unless they can dominate the Mountain West or join the Big 12, they live being an Indy. If they can keep up the scheduling they'll probably get $10 million a year for their next contract. I'm sure ESPN, FOX & NBC will all be interested in the inventory.

eventually it's going to kill their recruiting. Why would kids want to go to a place where there's no chance to ever go to a major bowl?

And great point earlier on the thread about Colorado. If Colorado rebounds, that makes things that much worse for BYU.

The AAC has been there with the money increasing through the networks because of the inventory. Do not bet on it.

That 84 title is one of the biggest travestys in college football.

I can remember when the PAC and WAC were basically even in strength.

This carried over to the PAC and MWC for a few years after the MWC's formation. Then the advantages of BCS recruiting hit.

Which led to the bottom falling out of most MWC programs sans Utah, BYU and TCU.

The addition of Utah and Colorado to the PAC adds two more western P5 programs to suck up talent and the other 10 PAC schools were doing it effectively already.

BYU is no longer one of the top programs in the west and a credible player on the national recruiting scene. They've still got 25 year old Mormon kids as an advantage but they can't pull national P5 recruits like they once did.
