Bourne did recently say that the goal was to return Godwin to the academic side and move all athletic offices to the renovated Convo. Where is the natatorium going or did that move to Convo as well, or perhaps staying put as the remaining Godwin holdover?

I haven’t seen specific plans, but word has it that a new natatorium would be built on some portion of Sentara Park.

Carrier Library expansion presses on and they're slinging structural steel as of today at that job site.

Was cool seeing this Saturday going up to the Quad. The little guy REALLY wanted to go play with the equipment more than see what was going on with Gameday though lol!

With all this IU talk....noticed that they did a very nice upgrade to their endzones and entrances...

Money aside for now - Godwin needs a reskin badly ..could have some nice drama and old school appeal for the largest front door to the football complex (a couple of these would be awesome

The library addition finished structural steel this week.

The Village residence hall has started to go vertical and you start to get a feel for how massive that building will be compared to buildings being replaced.

. Are we really going to spend 40 million on Godwin BEFORE the stadium expansion…or do you think we do both at the same time?

Yes. Godwin will be addressed before “stadium expansion.”

Godwin is being paid for with General Assembly appropriated tax dollars to convert it into academic use. Bridgeforth is a varsity athletic’s facility that must (by law) be paid for without tax dollars, and would (most likely) require bonding authority being granted by the General Assembly.

The two needs are separate entities. Want to speed-up BFS expansion? Break out your checkbook. BFS (and Plecker too) won’t be touched with tax money.

Any chance we sell naming rights to the new expanded stadium to get it done? CarMax Stadium at Bridgeforth Field? Not sure how the families of the currently named stadium would feel.

Isn’t it currently BFS at Zane Showker Field? Don’t see them removing the Showker name with all they’ve contributed.

Naming rights are usually a fraction of the cost unless a donor wants to stroke a large check. There are also ways around the name issues (see The Carl Smith Center, home of Harrison field at Scott stadium at UVa).

Yeah, that's what I figured but know other G5s have sold naming rights and replaced family names.

Understood, it was described to me that it can be used to push fundraising "across the finish line" in some circumstances.

ULL got the regional hospital system Our Lady of Lourdes to chip in $15 million for their $65 million renovation.

https://ragincajuns.com/news/2021/6/15/a...renovation

I think those could be marginally important dollars as that would be multiple years of private fundraising given our history.

NC State also has their home-side tower at Carter-Finley with a big “Towne Bank Center” sign, the bank pledged $5 million over ten years. Could also be a way to help fund. At JMU it could be the GloFiber Tower or Door Gorilla Tower for $43,231 and a pair a nail clippers.

It would be nice to get Sentara to increase their presence with JMU athletics. It will be interesting to see who we get for AD, it seems to be cultivating new large donors will be a significant priority. What other large companies have a presence in the Valley that could be on the list for the AD to hobknob with? It seems Kit Hughes seems to have great relationships with donors.

RE: Campus construction and projects
Believe me when I say that for the right number JMU would change the name of pretty much every facility we have. Obviously if there is a contract it can't change until that is done or they buy out that contract, but if CarMax wants to give a bunch of money I don't think we have any qualms changing the name of the AUBC, etc. As far as family names I think the same holds true, though they would probably try to substitute something else if that were to happen. If you went to Jeff tomorrow and said I am going to give many millions of dollars to JMU athletics but I want my name on the football stadium it will happen.

In general when JMU does capital raises they have a bunch of choices for naming rights to things from as big as the locker room to something like a study room. The numbers are actually quite reasonable generally compared to bigger schools, though many of the larger naming opps don't get filled as they are at higher numbers. While things already named are not on the list I am pretty sure if you are giving enough that could change.

Banks are popular sponsors because they throw millions out there plus give reduced deals on the financing.

Hey Showker family, how does "Mr. Chips, presented by Zane Showker" sound?

Do you disagree that if someone wants to give 50 million to business school or athletics they aren't renaming it? IF that was the donor stipulation and they did not that would be really dumb.

No, I totally agree. I just think Zane's Chips is a funny concept.

I also believe (and I am likely in the minority here) that it's corny as hell to want your name all over stuff. It's bordering on narcissistic. But if someone wants their name on things to prove to everyone that they're a BSD, sure, go for it.
