The main reason, I think, is nepotism. I have heard no good defense of having Saul on the staff when other, better options are available.
I wouldn't call nepotism the "main reason" - I'd call it the one and only reason. Moving Saul would address two main problems --- Tubby's lack of and bad PR and his lack of and bad recruiting. A dead person could almost do better.

In all fairness, it would depend on whether or not the dead person had prior experience recruiting.

because Tubby isn't the problem...the problem is with Memphis basketball itself.
he'll get it fixed, though. If anyone can do it...Tubby Smith can.
List of Problems
- NBA arena
- NBA players around all the time
- State of the art practice facility
- Top 25 program of all time
- Perennial top 25 attendance
- Fertile recruiting ground
On their own these problems are insurmountable; added together collectively, they make the job almost impossible for poor old Tubby. I do agree though, if anyone can win one NCAA game in the next 10 years, I think Tubby can do it.

No, the irony is your continued obsession with my posts when ignoring them is a viable alternative.

Other problems:
- Sufficient resources allowing his salary to be in the top ten of coaches making the NCAA Tourney last year.
- Intense fan interest generating almost daily media coverage - even during the off season.
- Playing in a conference with two or more bids most years.

LMAO
Par for the course. The bashers have turned a solid Memphis article into a Tubby and Saul bash fest.

You mean beside the fact that if Butch were to take a current asst. coach position he does not get paid from his last asst. coach position.

As confused as ever. You don't see anything abnormal with having a great recruiter handcuffed to an office while useless Saul is on the road, and then say that he can't be objective?
Hilarious.
Once again. Butch doesn't get paid from his last position if he is an asst. coach here.

Wouldn't they still have to pay the difference regardless of position?

I understand the deal and it makes no sense to me. IF Pierre had the program's best interests in mind and had long term plans here, he would take his 100K from us and collect 300K from NC State. He is either being greedy or he has no long term plans to be here, both supposedly not true.
The school could have told Pierre to get by on 400K this year and they would take the difference and add it to his contract after this season. I think he is already the 7th highest paid assistant in the country.
Meanwhile Tubby, who in theory is fighting for his life, has one of the best recruiters in the business chained to his desk and Saul out on the road. I'm not surprised at this of course. Tubby went on holiday a couple of weeks after taking the job here.
It would take a miracle for Tubby to have a sense of urgency about anything. Easy come easy go.

No, only if he is one of the top 3 assistants. His position, which is Director of Player Personnel, doesn't qualify.

Glad to have Coach Pierre, he seems to respect Tubby and is glad to be here. Has one kid as Arkansas State, another coaching at Middle TN.
"And yet Pierre chose to come here, despite the advice of colleagues who told him to accept one of the offers he had to continue on as an assistant coach elsewhere. Of course, after meeting with our future HOF coach he decided to come here . Our HOF coach said ---come here and get paid to do nothing but play golf like I do. Of course Pierre thought it was a SPECIAL SITUATION---getting paid for nothing--to not work.

He is being paid 500K to work at a desk and never has to travel other than from where he is living to the Finch Center or FEF. He would have been paid 400K if he chose to sit at home. The extra 100K he is getting from us makes him either the 3rd or 4th highest paid assistant in the NCAA...although technically he is not an assistant.

Oh ok, I get it. If he were an assistant it would offset and max out at 400k. As a non-assistant he gets the full 400k plus whatever he can get paid as a non-assistant.
