Top Universities in the US 2019

71 UConn
77 Tulane
97 USF
100 UC
118 SMU
118 Temple
118 UH
126 Tulsa
132 UCF

P6

One of the things about academic rankings is UCF and USF consistently ranking high. It's one thing for a school to be on the list when it was established in the 19th century. UCF and USF were founded in 1963 and 1956 respectively.

RE: Top Universities in the US 2019
That's not an academic ranking it's a popularity ranking.

It's based on a survey of people and who they know. True for both the academic ranking and employment. It shouldn't surprise anyone that a couple of the largest institutions in the United States are highly ranked. As would be traditionally known universities, the older schools mentioned.

Not knocking the achievements, it is still impressive and shows the reach a degree from a good university will give you, these schools are well known for producing quality graduates who lead their fields, perhaps the most important quality in a university today.

UConn: 75th (highest ranking, Quality of Faculty = 141st globally) [2/7 in Top 200]

Their publication and research output is lackluster as best, and it isn't buoyed enough by their education quality...SMU is only ranked because of how highly ranked their educational quality is, if not for that they'd be out of it too. To be clear, CRWU is a rankings system to best categorize and rank Universities on value-added metrics and to better assess the most productive Universities in a general sense.

Totally unrelated, but the OP mentioned the years that universities were founded. I looked up the AAC founding years out of curiosity:

1819 Cincinnati
1834 Tulane
1845 Naval Academy
1881 UConn
1884 Temple
1894 Tulsa
1895 Wichita
1907 ECU
1911 SMU
1912 Memphis State
1927 Houston
1956 USF
1963 UCF

Our research just isn't a normally identifiable field. A ton of our research and $$$ goes to petroleum research, where we have tons of publication. We have several industry standard books and chapters in engineering handbooks written by TU staff. The problem is, we're not pumping out enough things like psychology research that some of these other schools get credit for (even though its a lot less intensive than the engineering research we do).

We don't have a real med school either so that hurts.

As an undergraduate school though, we're head and shoulders above a good deal of the schools in the conference. Tulane (medical specialty) and SMU (business specialty) are our main competition. UConn is really good too, we just are so far away from them.

Couldn't agree more with that last bit...as a teaching institution Tulsa is definitely up there. The ranking system in question measures all aspects of a University's impact however, that's why they were not ranked.

Specialized research just means that you've got only a few journals to publish within, and your citations will be lacking due to the lack of interdisciplinary work. I would agree though, the Medical School not being out there is a big hindrance.

Funny, as I work in academia.... I disagree with that statement.

REAL people within academia regard nearly all of these polls with a simple eyeroll. There are thousands of reasonable metrics with which to rank a university and cherry picking from them to make your own institution look better is just a reality we live in.

Eight years in the faculty ranks of Civil Engineering along with 6 years as a staff member at three institutions (all of which are large, public research institutions...none on that list above), but the only rankings any of the three institutions I've been housed at have only mentioned CRWU.

REAL people within academia have different interpretations of what's important depending on what area of academia that they're a part of...no? I'm assuming from your avatar name, you're a member of the classical arts (law)...as a STEM guy (engineering), we look at VERY different things when it comes to what's important.

That's very similar to UC's inception...sure the school on the hill was started in 1819, but the incorporation of a University of Cincinnati wasn't until 1870. Both years are on the University seal.
