Should football start causing too many problems-athletes getting paid, more rapes, more recruiting scandals, I could see something like this happening. Especially with the privates not named USC or Notre Dame.

I don't know that athletes getting paid is a problem per se....

Then why not say Raleigh-Durham? It's actually a bigger TV market than Charlotte and Duke is in it.

Or both. . .
It's a hpothetical that will never happen. I didn't deep research it just did some casual toss together.
Raleigh-Durham works fine for me

Some of those schools wouldn't want to be full blown professional minor leagues. And they may just prefer to limit it basketball. That's only 13-15 players.
Lawsuits or NCAA rules changes could easily put us there with salaries, not just scholarships and expenses.

My point is that college athletes actually getting the pay they deserve is not a "problem" in the sense that rapes and recruiting scandals are.
And if paying players means ND opts to drop out of the race instead, then too bad, so sad.

With Notre Dame the question isn't the school's position, but whether the president would get overruled by the boosters. With a lot of schools that aren't football powers, football boosters don't have as much influence.

A private school only super conference that would make sense and be strong.
North Division:
Notre Dame
Northwestern
Syracuse
Boston College
Wake Forrest
Duke
Southern Division:
Miami
TCU
SMU
Vandy
Tulane
Rice
Florida and Texas for recruiting as well as midwest, Carolinas, and New England. Notre Dame, Miami, and TCU anchor the football. Some good basketball, Duke, Wake, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Miami, and now TCU. Major media markets, Boston, New York, Chicago, Miami, Charlotte, Nashville, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans.
That might actually be a workable league geographically and capable of competing at top level on the field and for eyeballs.
USC, Stanford, and BYU could upgrade the competition by dropping Rice, Tulane, and say Wake or SMU but geographically it would make little sense and the money would have to be outrageous to make it work.
The future is 16 teams in conference world. So actually just add those teams and it’s really strong

Unlike Tulane, SMU, or Rice our location is not a hot bed of recruiting and college football. Combined with our low enrollment and alumni base we would be out of luck. The western schools coming into a 16 member conference could get us in as geographical and mission fit. One of the reasons we fit well in the AAC is we regularly punch above our weight (AAC mentality) and we have huge schools in the conference to offset our lack of alumni.
Adding USC, Stanford, and BYU would open the door for it to be workable with their large alumni bases and national draws.
Enrollment
West:
USC 45,500
BYU 33,500*
Stanford 16,300
Tulane 13,500
SMU 11,800
TCU 10,300
Rice 6,700
Tulsa 4,600
East:
Syracuse 21,000
Northwestern 21,000
Miami 15,500
Boston College 14,500
Vandy 12,600
Notre Dame 11,900*
Wake 7,100
Duke 6,200
*Also carry national relevance as top flight universities for religious associations.
Miami and USC bring national reputations as well.

Wasn't a Magnolia Conference looked at once upon a time but didn't work out due to the money some schools were making back then?
Would be even more difficult to pull something like that off now right?

I dont know if the Magnolia Confernece was ever a very serious proposal. Lets be real---today no P5 is leaving their cushy P5 meal ticket to be in a new conference. So, any private school conference would have to assembled from schools outside of the P5.
Rice, Tulane, SMU, and Tulsa make a lot of sense together. Add in Navy, Air Force, and Army---you become a bit more far flung----but you certainly would have 7 schools that would be great institutional fits. You need just one more school to get to 8. Given the layout--you'd ideally like make #8 a travel partner for Air Force.
