"There's no talk about expansions among our two boards," CFP executive director Bill Hancock said, referring to the university presidents and the conference commissioners. "At some point, maybe four or five years from now, we will begin talking about what to do after 2026. And no one knows where those conversations will lead. But certainly for now, there are no talks of expanding."

That may be true—-but it’s also almost word for word what Bill Hancock was saying at the end of the BCS era.

The key word there is "end". They're not nearing the end of the CFP contract, yet.
Of course the powers-that-be are not bound to do something just because Hancock said this... but their history suggests that he's correct that any changes will become effective after the current deal expires at the end of the 2026 season. They didn't break or throw away the BCS contracts to begin the CFP. The CFP began after the last BCS contract expired.

Right, and at the *end* of the BCS contract, the playoff was expanded. But not before then, and the CFP will run its full course too.

1/3 of the way through the contract. End will be here quicker than you think. Unless the SEC gets shutout next two years in a row, then it will happen then :)

I know that 2025 will be here pretty quick. The older you get, the faster the years fly by.
My only point was that those who hold out hope that somehow the 10 conferences are going to decide to end the CFP early and expand the playoffs before the contract ends in 2025 are engaging in purely wishful thinking, there's very little chance that happens.

The committee loves to use the conference championships as the “quarter-finals”. Just wait until it works out perfectly one year and they’ll all pat themselves on the back.
