This year's team COULD be as good as any of the past teams, IF we have a second pitcher that gets it done. I think Buresch is that 2nd pitcher, and a lineup with Good and Alexander in it is a nightmare for opposing pitchers. Hard to pitch to or around them back to back.

Jmusteeler. You are obviously into softball and also know a lot about JMUs program. I was recently told by a parent of a player down here in the 757 some things about JMU and the head coach that I would love for you to comment on. It painted her and the program in a bad light, and I wanted to defend our program and coach but didnt know how. Their daughter is a pitcher at one of the top softball schools in this area, normally competing for state championship. I mean, she was dominant last year as a soph. In light of all this she already committed as a junior verbally to another VA D1 school. Here is the mom’s story: she was invited to a tournament at JMU- kind of a showcase thing I guess. She was then told there was no need to attend because the JMU coach said she would be at another tournament closer to where this girl lives and was already committed to play and would watch/work with her there. The JMU coach didnt show up. Then she was told the same thing again, that the coach would be at another tournament and see/talk with her there, but the same thing happened. No show by JMU coach. They are making this out to be a big deal and using it as ammo for why the other school is better etc. Does this even make sense, and is this a common thing to happen?

I would be shocked if what she is telling you is the whole story, I've known coaches LaPorte and Herzig to be diligent in their attention to players they are interested in. I've coached several players in travel and high school that were on their radar, and I've never had them promise to show up and then not show. They've even showed for high school championships to watch their players, including ours 2 years ago when they showed for the Class 6 and Class 5 games (because they had players in both, and players they were interested in playing in both as well).

They are very different from Mickey Dean, BUT Coach Dean wouldn't tell you he was coming and then not show either. He would simply tell you he wasn't interested, and he'd even direct you to a school that might be. My guess is there's baggage here, and they're really not interested. But even in that scenario, they would never mislead a kid into thinking they were coming and then not show up. I feel confident there's something here you're not being told. It's also possible the message is being filtered through a travel coach who may have a communication issue with those coaches. College coaches are not likely to burn bridges like that.

Thanks. I know she is part of a travel team. I don’t think it’s the norm, but this kid has an actual full ride for softball. She is an ace and was nearly perfect and unittable as a soph- dad said she is hitting 66 on the gun too. One of her teammates signed an LOI this fall to attend JMU, but the JMU girl is not nearly getting a full ride. Anyway, talking to both girl’s parents has been enlightening. The kid coming to JMU just loves our school and would probably be here regardless. The other kid is simply looking for the most $$$$. Maybe our coaches picked up on that.
Her dad telling you his daughter is receiving a "full ride" tells me a lot.

It’s also a common thing to add 5 mph or so to whatever the gun says because unless you see her pitch, you probably can’t tell. Also, it depends on what radar gun is used. Was it her pitching coach’s gun or a radar gun at a tournament? Those can be significantly off (in favor of the pitcher).

Also, very common for a parent to not divulge the entire truth. Most parents think their kid is the best and deserves to be treated as such. She might be a very solid player, but some parents have a tendency to diverge slightly from the truth.

Throwing 66 isn’t going to get you anywhere if that’s all you got. Hitters can time up your fastball eventually if your rise ball and breaking ball have little to know movement.

RE: 2019 Dukes Softball
Excited about this year's team.

I thought LaPorte had a great first year considering Good was out. I don't know how you could of expected any more from the team. Two years removed from Ford and Good and this team was still very good.

I hope Megan is 100% following the injury. I'm not aware of more dominant player in JMU sports history.

Kudos to the school to allow the team to travel across the states to line up a high caliber OOC schedule.

I've been to about 15 games the last three years and find the sport very enjoyable.

I wish they would upgrade the scoreboard, but I guess they would also need to upgrade the baseball scoreboard as well.

Excited about 2019, and interested to see how well the 2020 team fares in the post Good era. The key will likely be adding another top pitcher.

2019 Dukes Softball
I am looking forward to catching a few games in Tempe again this year. The Ladies did a similar trip to UofA and ASU 2 years ago and I was able to see 3 games.

JMU lists a fall schedule. I've not seen this before. No results listed.

Fall Softball Schedule

Anyone know what this is about? Is it like spring football playing some local area programs?

Most all programs have been doing this for several years. Baseball programs are now playing some exhibition games in the fall as well in addition to their intrasquad scrimmages. Volleyball plays a series of matches in the spring as well.

I think it is good for everyone. Usually played against nearby schools to reduce associated travel costs.

yea, i was wondering too. it's been awful quiet on her return.

even a lot of the publicity items for the upcoming year have not featured her. i don't know if there is anything to that, just wondered if maybe she was still injured or feeling the effects of her injury.

RE: 2019 Dukes Softball
OVERALL FALL NOTES
- As a squad, the pitching staff notched a 1.35 ERA over 50 total innings and 186 opponent at-bats, led by Buresch's 1.07 ERA.
- Buresch also led the Dukes with 11 strikeouts.
- Good only allowed one walk in her four games on the mound.
- From a hitting standpoint, the Dukes totaled 58 hits in 205 at bats, averaging a .283 percentage.
- The team registered 13 doubles, one triple – coming from Good, five homers led by Gordon's two and 36 RBIs.
- Good and Naujokas led the fall with seven hits apiece while Good and Elizabeth Waln posted team-high .500 averages.

Sounds like Good is still working on shaking the rust off. She did pitch at least one complete game, so the stamina is still there. Will be interesting to see how the 1,2,3 of Good, Alexander, and Buresch get lined up. I'm glad Good got some time in the fall to get back in game situations. It's hard for practice to replicate that, especially when you're seeing the same batters every single day. If our pitching comes close to expectations, I think the main thing will be whether the fielding can cut down on errors. I'm hoping our offense can find consistency this year to take care of that side of the ball. Could be a great year for softball.

Good and Buresch are more likely the 1-2 punch. Alexander might get called in if needed, but expect to see CC and Megan in the lineup on a daily basis.

If Good is the old Good with that schedule we have we could move up the poll pretty quickly.

Ambitious goal, but the goal for the regular season should be a top 8 seed. It's possible if Good returned to old form.

Here's the entire preseason poll per FPN... https://fastpitchnews.com/fpn-college-so...ign=buffer

Our gals will definitely have their chance to make a splash in the early season pre-CAA schedule. We will face...

#6 Tennessee (opening weekend in Florida)
#7 Arizona (on their home field)
#10 Michigan (at Arizona State)
#11 Arizona State (on their home field)
#12 Oregon (opening weekend in Florida)
#24 Minnesota (at Arizona)

Dukes will also face these teams who made the NCAA Tournament last year...

-California (season opener in Florida)
-Kentucky (1 game opening weekend at Florida...UK was #16 overall seed in last year's NCAAT)
-Liberty (1 game at home)
-Hofstra (3 games at Hofstra...and likely another face off in the CAAT championship at JMU)
-Drake (1 game at Arizona)
-New Mexico State (1 game at Arizona State)

I believe the Lacrosse team lost a lot, and softball brings back Good. We'll have to see how strong Lacrosse team is this spring.

Full disclaimer - Due to success, I'm 20 times more excited about JMU softball than JMU Baseball, but how come women's softball travels all over the nation and Baseball travels much less (one trip to CA, and one to Louisville). Is it based in invites? I'd have to think softball will incur much more travels costs. Would title IX come into the equation?

I figure it’s because our softball team is a national player whereas baseball hasn’t been for quite a while.
