Memphis is a newer rival because of both our success in Football. I feel the same way about Houston.
I feel like the UCF-ECU rivalry has always been heated on the internet (especially back in the days of the ESPN forums), but hasn't really translated to the field. The casual fan on each side doesn't really seem to get up for either game.
Not true
Only since Mo made ECU not worth watching. However, I think UCF beating ECU on a hail Mary in 2014 as time expired broke the program. We had 41,000 on a Thursday night for that game. We're counting on Coach Houston to fix it.

And the Trash Can is REAL!!!
I don't really think of that as the tipping point. We had Birmingham Bowl against Florida to look forward to. Even started 2015 with a close game at Florida and a decent win over VT. Late 2015 killed it for me, specifically the terrible clock management that gave Cincy a chance to kick a field goal. The last 3 years might have been completely different if pirates had won that game in overtime to get to 6-6.

I'm actually looking forward to the 2008 CUSA championship rematch. Added bonus if (not holding my breath) both teams are playing for something when that game rolls around.
Man I miss defense. If our current defense played that game today, Tulsa wins 68-3.

When in CUSA, the only games I really paid attention to was ECU, UH, and USM. What other game really mattered. USF did not care to play UCF at the time.
I never thought of UH and USM as rivals at all. Tough games for sure, but not rivals. I think Marshall was UCF's biggest C-USA rival after ECU.

I've weighed 2014 vs 2015 as the tipping point, and I could go either way. The UCF game just felt like a punch to the gut that was hard to get over. Especially after the "victory formation". The UCF rivalry is real. We just both need to be good at the same time.
If Cincinnati had missed that last field goal in 2015, Ruff would never have been fired and we would probably still have Compher. I think that field goal eventually lead to the demise of Ruff, Lebo, Compher, Mo, Shanahan and Staton, in that order. I can't remember when I've felt this positive about the future of ECU Athletics.

Marshall wasn’t much of a rival in cusa.
I would say our most contested rivals in Conference USA were East Carolina and Tulsa.

I was an acquaintance of Emil. Went to a few road games with him after he graduated. Not familiar with this hit, but Emil was a nice soft spoken guy in person. His son plays for Bama and is going to be a pretty high NFL draft pick in the next draft.
For a long time we weren’t so much of a rival as a whipping boy. At one point we were 1 and 5 against the Pirates.
