I think this is about as good a hire as FAU can get. Just like you only get a Petrino or Kiffen one time after they’re damaged goods you don’t get that setup every time you need a coach. Willie T drove me nuts with some of his stuff and especially his love of Kawaun Jakes. Plenty of negatives to put on Willie. But his positives outweigh them in my opinion.

Haters gonna hate. Willie needs to break out his grill for his press conferences.

FAU will become the Bradenton Manatee Owls doe! He should kill in South Florida as well but dude will hit up his hometown area.

lol what has Taggart ever won?

He has never won so much as a division title. No conference titles obviously. He's never even won a bowl game since he bailed on his teams twice prior to their bowl game and lost the only actual bowl game that he coached in.

He's 56-62 all time as a coach.

Someone above mentioned he knows how to win "at the G5 level" but that's not true either. He was 16-20 at WKU and he was 24-25 at USF.

He then went to a program in FSU with enough talent to blindly fart your way to at least 7-9 wins per season and somehow managed to lose there, even while playing in a pretty bad ACC conference.

He's a good coach? 03-lmfao

He had USF 7-1 East Co-Champs with Temple in 2016, but lost out on the tie breaker because USF lost at Temple in a game the staring QB got injured and the backup threw a pick six. Generally, almost everyone considers that USF team to be the most talented team in the AAC that year. Finished ranked higher than anyone in the AAC. He would have won huge the following year at USF. A bad as Strong was, he went 10-2 with Willie's players. Now we see how good of a coach Strong is. But he was able to roll out Willie's players and get 10 wins. Most feel Willie would have went 11-1 at least that year, 2017, if he had stayed, and fairly easily at that.

Well I had different perception with what he did at FSU. Do admit he had success at the smaller school levels.before that. Doesn't matter what I think now. He's my schools coach so I'll support him. Just hope he learned from his mistakes and I'd be pumped to eat crow later

He can start by hiring real assistant coaches and not just his boys. He has a darn good defensive coordinator that he should be trying to keep

RE: FAU hires Willie Taggart
This hire is a crapshoot. It sounds like Taggert can recruit, but he's not necessarily known as a "good" coach. At the least, it's debatable. For FAU's sake, and for the conference's sake, I hope Taggert can assemble a qualified staff, given the budgets for assistants at the G5 level...

RE: FAU hires Willie Taggart
Can someone name the coaches in CUSA that are known for being good coaches?

Let me make the list of the 11 that's coached at least 1 year in CUSA and each of you can debate the good proven head coaches. The list is in no order and my personal opinion Holtz is the best proven coach in CUSA and he has zero CUSA championships and no 10 win seasons. Doc is the only coach to coach a top 25 team and Marshall fans want him gone. While some of you will list Clark as the best I'm in a wait and see mode on what he can do..yes, I'm going there. Without NCAA help and win games vs teams with a heartbeat.

From the looks of it going by current CUSA coaches and what they done...Taggart is a homerun hire and for a coach that cant coach he's the only coach in CUSA that's coached a top 20 G5 team . I seem to recall the same argument about Holtz when Tech hired him...cant coach. While championships has eluded Tech under Holtz. The man has won 9 games 4 out of the last 6 seasons and 7 and 8 the other 2. And with in 1 win almost every year of winning the west. Head coaching experience at the G5 level is a major plus.

edit: I forgot about Butch Davis...historically he would be the best but coaching in the G5 is different.
1. Doc
2. Stockstill
3. Clark
4. Holtz
5. Hopson
6. Davis
7. Littrell
8. Bloomgren
9. Dimel
10. Helton
11. Healy
-----------------
12. Taggart
13 ODU coach
14. UTSA coach

He was fired before the end of his third season at a good program. There's more than enough reason to worry.

OK, Holtz was also fired so was Mario Cristobal at FIU

All 3 have shown they can win and there's not as many reason to worry as hiring a coach without and head coaching experience or hiring one without FBS coaching experience. So again when it comes to the current lineup of CUSA coaches..what's your point? There's a lot less reasons to worry than 90% of CUSA schools. Taggart was fired before the end of his 2nd season...

again he build a program that was top 20 in the G5 there's no current coach in CUSA that can say that. Taggart also left the 2 G5 programs better off than when he took the job.

I think this is a great hire for FAU. Congratulations!

If WKU were in need of a coach and Willie Taggart was available would I take him back? In a heartbeat!

How's Hueppel doing?

How's he doing? I assume great. He's 22-4 over 2 seasons with a conference title and has a true freshman QB who just threw for 3,400 yards and 28 TDs.

3 losses in one season...we know how fickle the fanbase is. Everything is great as long as you are in the New Year Day 6 game....but if you miss it a couple of times....oh boy.

RE: FAU hires Willie Taggart
After some thought...I think Taggart is a good hire. We hired an experienced head coach with success at G5. Looking at our previous hires 2 (Schnellenberger, Kiffin) had head coaching experience. They did alright for us, one got a statue and a field named after him. The other 2 (Pelini, Partridge) had no head coaching experience (one was a high school head coach) neither were coordinators. They combined for...14 wins. One got canned mid season for doing blow in the Keys on a bye week instead of going to a high school football game to recruit.

The ability to hire a HC with experience isn't easy and Willie is a nationally known name. Are there risk? Absolutely...but there are no guarantees at G5 of success in any coaching hire.

I think we will be fine. I have not heard what the assistant coaches money pool is. I am hoping that Willie took $750k instead of the $1mil Kiffin got in order to have a bigger assistants pool. That is where any HC's success really comes from.

We sold out another Black Friday game despite having 3 losses. I don't think the fanbase is going anywhere. I think everyone understands that we were a combined 7 points from going 13-0 again, given that all of the losses were on the road and all due to mistakes that a true freshman QB can make, even if he's a phenom.

The irony is Taggart failing at FSU is a blessing for FAU because if he does well hes gonna be here longer because P5 wont seek to take a chance on him for a good while. If he sucks his buyout isnt huge because he's only making 750k a year. He's also got roots in Florida.

It's a blessing if he learned some lessons. If he brings all.his cant coach buddies as assistants just as he did at FSU , then he will bring us down

FAU hires Willie Taggart
How many other people have coached at three FBS schools in Florida?
I can’t think of any off the top of my head but I’m sure y’all know. Schnellenberger?
