Some programs are up right now and others are down. We tend to only remember the recent. I’d be interested to see this repeated in a few years when the power shifts among teams. South Alabama has been decent historically in basketball, and it looks like we have turned the corner under Coach Riley. I hope we see the same happen for football now that we have an on campus stadium to go along with our practice facilities and field house. Teams can no longer negatively recruit against us for playing in Ladd Stadium!

Marshall fans have a lot of responses. A lot of them named their team in the number 1 slot, though (heh).

It seems in most Sun Belt fan bases a majority of fans like the set up, except for App fans whose 30 respondees are unanimous it's too spread out (they'd probably like it better if we traded UNCC for one of the western SBC teams).

I found myself wanting another option on the second question of “14 is too many, C-USA should have stopped at 12”.

Those Marshall pivot tables are pretty flushed out now ... only lacking teams with clear lack of minority support in the aggregate field. To copypasta as it stands right now:

Votes by Marshall fans

Which of these best describes your current mood toward your current conference affiliation? COUNTA of Who do you root for?
(Marshall/WKU only) I'd rather join the MAC (Mid-American Conference) 12.90%
(NMSU/Liberty/JMU only) I'd rather join whatever forms out of C-USA/Sun Belt in my region 1.61%
Perfectly happy, keep it as-is 4.84%
Too spread out, we need to refocus on a regional conference 80.65%

No partial members for me thanks 74.19%

I'll show some examples by dumping some extra Marshall sheets in there.

Thanks GTS! I’m going to have some fun with this.

I’m going to start with taking the average scores that each of the 26 fanbases scored the other 25 programs to find out who likes who.

Next I’ll run a comparison to see if the love is mutual (ex. ULM fans might give LA Tech a high score but LA Tech might score them very low)

Once we find out who’s popular and who their friends are we should see a couple conferences start to form and a few schools shake to the bottom that no one really wants—or at least that’s how I anticipate it will go.

Cajun— my thoughts exactly. It doesn’t matter who you want to be in a conference if no one wants to be in a conference with you.

from all this data, im most interested in 5 results. the middle group of USM, TROY, UAB, MTU, and WKU. it makes since the west would be tilted to the west, and east tilted to the east, but these 5 would have a pick of where they want to go, and might be the difference makers in any potential movement. could a new eastern base conference without any of these 5 still be exciting for eastern schools?

If I had to guess, I’d say MTSU and WKU will lean East, USM will lean West, and the 3 Alabama schools will be a total grab bag.

I could also see these 6 “Central” schools orienting Central, favoring each other along with 4 others on the periphery.

It’s funny for me (wku) I’d rather have the more central teams. Mtsu, uab, la tech, usm, USA, Troy, Marshall, then add in some good complimentary schools.

I plan on making the trip to Mobile this fall. I look forward to seeing the new stadium on 09/26.

I am updating the aggregate counters to be much more resilient to continued voting. Google Sheets is a little weird.

Next up UAB ... but I offer the caveat that their overwhelming preference is to join the AAC. I don't think I'm going too far in saying they feel that C-USA is in general beneath them. So I expect their answers to be salty.

Rather than average the mutual scores, take the lower of the 2. If team A loves B, but B loathes A, then I think they should be kept apart. This is the same as when there exists a universally attractive team, that team’s preferences should be more determinative of where they end up.

RE: Conference Descrambler: Reorganizing C-USA, Sun Belt, and a few others ...

The UAB sentiment is likely similar throughout the C-USA membership, especially among schools part of C-USA 2.0.

In my opinion, losing UAB would be a critical blow to C-USA. If, however, the AAC offers ODU, C-USA might stabilize. The UAB results will be interesting.
