This makes a lot of sense, actually. Especially with the "possibility" of football eventually shutting down all-together.

Correct. Only way you'd see a MAC school drop FBS would be if the entire organization/structure of the school had to change.

It might be a take the first opportunity thing.

Article out of Akron talking about its overdue to consider dropping out of FBS.

One option they might have since they have a good basketball team is to consider a move to the Horizon League. They would probably be an automatic admit if they wanted in. Then they could park FB in the MVC to give Youngstown St a rival.

They are one of those schools that has the facilities to be consistently successful at the FCS level but no the cachet to attract G5 level talent.

Eh, that reminds me of the kinds of articles that come out every year on why the lower-tier of FBS shouldn't exist. What do you know, the majority of those quotes in that article are from before the Covid 'crisis.' Point is: the school didn't back down then & I'll believe it when I see it they're backing down now.

Here's another one on U of Akron:

University of Akron to eliminate 6 of 11 colleges

The restructuring also includes a cut of 20% to the athletic budget.

Akron has had issues with money numerous times in the past. They have been a university that has been willing to put itself in financial problems just to try to compete directly against other universities (namely Kent State but others as well) but doing so on those other universities strengths rather than what it was good at. This has put it into serious debt problems multiple times that they have had to work itself out of and thus far it has not actually worked to its long term benefit and this time the crisis has prevented Akron from being able to recover from its latest set of boondoggles.

It doesn't have a big enough overall reputation to attract students outside of Northeast Ohio.

They tried to change it with Ohio Poly branding but that didn't work.
