For me it's just like when bird flu and swine flu hit. Every year when flu season comes around you see it on the news about flu season and the recommendation to get your flu shot. I think it's become like "white noise" to people because we hear it every year. But when something the layman hasn't heard of like bird flu, swine flu, or mad cow disease flares up it gets talked about like crazy. And to me the strength and length of the news cycle for each disease lasts based on how much and how long it impacts humans.

Sweden's death per capita is right in line with most globally-industrialized western EU countries. It is better than Belgium, Italy, Spain, UK, and France. And it is comparable to its most comparable neighbor - Netherlands. (Writers love to compare Finland and Norway. Culturally and geographically, it makes sense. But not in population density or industry.)

I work closely with Swedes and their economy is doing fine - better than indicated in the skinny column you cited. Single digit unemployment through all of this. And the GDP remains to be seen. Of course, much of that is dependent upon the global economy.

And the column didn't even mention schools. Their kids have not lost basically a full semester of education - compared to most of the rest of ours.
