RE: ******THE Official Marshall vs EKU Game Thread... 1:00PM (EDT) ESPN*****
I heard on the radio driving home from the game that it was the best 1st game stats for a 1st year QB at MU. It was good to be back in the stands after all the covid crazy we've been through.

Way to go Marshall! Now if North Texas and UTEP come through tonight, CUSA can come out of week one with at least a little semblance of respectability.

Well, I'm calling it now. Marshall, if Doc can stay out of these kids way, will be in the title game in cusa. Winning it, unsure yet, but definitely in the title game.

On a side note, I think its funny seeing the AACs best struggle with the sunbelt today.

After rewatching the game Ive revised my assessment of who I think Wells is like. And I have to go back to 2002. Grant Wells is Stan Hill 2.0. Wells is Hill before the Tennessee injury.

I still think Stan Hill would have been the 3rd straight Marshall QB drafted in the NFL had he not tore his ACL in the Tennessee game. A game Marshall was on track to win before Hill went down.

Congrats on the win Marshall. Wells looks like the real deal, and you look like the best C-USA program so far.

RE: ****W1-FINAL: Eeastern Kent. 0 @ Marshall 59****
Marshall's best QBs had very little interest from other programs out of HS.

Chad Pennington
Marshall offer

Byron Leftwich
Marshall offer
Richmond offer (Wanted him to play DB)

Rakeem Cato
Marshall offer
FIU offer (Was committed to FIU until Tommy Shuler committed to Marshall)

Grant Wells
Marshall offer
Charlotte offer
Yale offer

Byron has said before had Marshall not offered him a scholarship to play QB that he would have walked on at Howard, Leftwich is from Washington DC after all.

Rakeem has stated that he switched his commitment when it come down to playing with TY Hilton for one year or Tommy Shuler for four years.

It hit me after you said Stan Hill, I agree with his talent being like Hill's. I've gotta admit that I was really worried about Wells coming into the the game. I remember him from the green and white game in '19 and wasn't impressed. Was excited with how well we played on both sides of the ball. Also pleased that the play calling was better.

For me, the only thing I didn't like was someone else being in our seats. Everyone got moved for distancing. I used to be surrounded by passionate fans and now I'm in another section surrounded by spectators. But at least were playing games, with fans, and playing well.

I have been one to never really care about where I'm located in the stadium. I like buying tickets from different vantage points, and meeting different fans.

But nothing can replicate the excitement of watching a Marshall game in the student section.

That's why, I think personally, I prefer the end zone because you are closer to the student section. I find sitting in the chair backs to be quite boring.

Not what you would really consider worried but was very cautiously optimistic. I didn't expect to see some of the throws I seen from Wells in his first game as a RS Freshman. The throw to Broc Thompson from across the field to the other sideline was his best non touchdown throw. It was maybe an 8 yard throw down field but traveled at least 25-30 yards just to get there. Its the type of throws most QB coaches will chew you out for even attempting because most QBs don't have the arm strength to pull it off. Even some elite QBs don't have that throw in their repertoire. And Grant Wells made it look simple.

Grant Wells is a barely there 2 star afterthought recruit. Under the old system he would have been a 1 star.

We know this answer, but it makes you wonder. How a guy like this goes completely unrecruited and unheralded?

if he were on any of those national feeder teams he would be a four-star talent no doubt.

for those that didn't watch the game, I know you're looking at this and thinking, man the Marshall fans are really over blowing this kid.

Watch the game and you'll get it.

He may very well be our Jon Elmore of football. A kid from the state of WV that played against what is perceived as inferior talent. Even if he did play in AAA, the highest classification in the state of WV. The people that do work for recruiting services that rank these kids may have seen Wells and just completely skipped him because of where he was from and just automatically put him down as a 2 star. But more than likely none of them had never even heard about or seen the kid.

The small amount of tape I found on him at George Washington HS looked good but then again it wasn't like he was surrounded by great players at GW. He was kind of a do it all one man team.

Also don't be surprised if he ever lines up at punter or quick kicks the ball. He was also GWs punter and avged 44.7 yards per punt.

Here are his rankings from Rivals, 247 and ESPN:
Rivals: 89 out of the Pro Style QBs in the class of 2019
247: 77 out of the Pro Style QBs in the class of 2019
ESPN: 32 out of the Duel Threat QBs in the class of 2019

These rankings tell me that Rivals and 247 just pulled names out of a hat after they ranked probably the top 25. They both have him as a Pro Style when he is clearly a Duel Threat. ESPN is the only service that even looked at him.

Congrats Marshall on the dominating win! Looking forward to our matchup this year. Hopefully Tech will have a respectable performance against Baylor next week.

It's funny you say Jon Elmore, I was literally thinking the same thing this morning. He is our football Jon Elmore.

If this works out, we are set for years.
