Hospitalization numbers remain flat with omicron. Everybody in there now is because of delta.

And the capacity isn’t the issue. It’s the staffing that’s the problem. And the reason there are short staffs is because of all the vaccine mandates which scrubbed out a lot of people that were already employed in a place not many want to work in.

THAT is the issue. Not covid itself. And certainly not with omicron.

Another thing about covid hospitalizations, IIRC, in many states this just means you tested positive for the virus while in a hospital, even if you aren't in the hospital because of sickness from the virus. E.g., if I went to a hospital for surgery on my wrist, and while there they give me a virus test and it comes back positive, I am now a "covid hospitalization" even if I am asymptomatic.

It's kind of like the covid death statistics, where a death is chalked up as a full covid death even if it wouldn't have occurred sans a co-morbity.

I agree. ESPiN wants it to go away, to a degree. I know that they have allowed two A5 teams to replace so-called covid teams that could not play in the bowl game. What is ESPiN's goal, keep its present system, or pay more money for a larger playoff scope with less bowl game with a limited membership. I am thinking the latter with these cancelled bowl games.

My guess as well. If ESPN really wanted these bowl games to happen they would. For me the playoffs have to be more than 8 teams. Do away with bowls and conference championship games. 12 teams at least.

I would agree, but it is college athletics. That is the real problem, where the networks is calling the shots, and college football is going to be reduced in numbers to show only the so-called relevant conferences. It will be a semi- pro league.

Hospitals won't do same day covid test right before surgery. That's not a good example.

RE: Military Bowl CANCELED (ECU vs BC)
Pirate here… BC had 3 starting OLs opting out…knew about it for days before, but did not announce. Sunday morning they all of a sudden had a mixture of 42 players out because of COVID, transfers and opting outs. Inside word through the Pirate Club was BC had 5 or 6 COVID cases after Sunday morning tests. The Pirates had 2 cases after Sunday morning tests. BC has not provided a breakdown of the 42 cases per their website.

In addition, per a mother of a BC player who discussed the situation with Pirate fans in Annapolis, the players still wanted to play. Overruled by the administration…said they did it for the safety of the players and program.

The system is not working.

You've got to take history into account here... The BC administration--the President of the College, mind you--once expressed contempt that BC "had" to play "a school like" the University of Cincinnati in a bowl game.

I can only imagine what the "higher-ups" at Boston College must have felt about "having to play" ECU.

Someone posted this on another board. The BC seniors’ bowl experience:

2018 bowl game cancelled due to weather
2019 trucked by UC and tried to quit game at halftime due to weather
2020 cancelled due to Covid
2021 cancelled due to Covid

Here's to hoping it happens. They're a losing proposition for almost all of the schools anyway.

In addition, ECU sold close to 5.5 k through their ticket office and according to others, Pirate fans purchased a significant amount via the bowl and other sources, so we were headed toward just south of 10k there. Reports are BC had sold very little. Per reports from Annapolis the day before the game there was a purple invasion and very few BC fans…it was not going to be a good PR day for the folks from Boston.

Agreed, heck Massachusetts and Maryland both have Republican governors. Whilst North Carolina has a Democrat, has nothing to do with blue states vs red.

Ah yes, Maryland and Massachusetts those bastions of conservatism.

It just seems so odd. No one is forcing them to have a football program. If you don't want to play, then don't. Just because the administration doesn't appreciate the game, it doesn't mean the players don't. It sounds like they need a culture change, at minimum.

If this becomes the norm, cut the number of bowls and place 7&5 and 6&6 teams that aren't chosen for a bowl on a covid waiting list. When schools drop out replace them from the covid waiting list. 07-coffee3

If this was real they would not be firing people for non-compliance with mandates or making tik tok videos all day.

I guess is only real when it hits you personally. But hey no one is changing anybody’s mind on this or any other internet board.

I meant the ER thing, not the virus.

ECU has launched bowl fund to help cover the expenses lost by not participating in the Military Bowl after Boston College backed out.

Losing out on these bowl games is costly for G5 schools.

See here's the thing, ECU accepted first. BC didn't have to agree to the game at all.

Unless ECU fans cover it they will. All the expenses of a bowl game with none of the payout, I don't know how any team in a cancelled bowl won't lose money on it.
