Is SHSU looking to expand? Not that the NCAA enforces the 15K attendance requirement, but their stadium doesn't even seat 15k.

Yes, their AD said in the press release that expansion to the stadium and upgrades to the press box would be happening.

Why is Enemas U. having a hard time getting money. They get some from the state and if I'm right they also get it from Sunland Park Casino. Heck, we would love to see UTEP getting dough from the Indian casino, Speaking Rock but even though this year they've been donating more it's more of an ad kind of support. Speaking Rock needs to set aside a percentage of their winnings to the university even if it's one percent. Heck, one percent is better than NO PERCENT.

No need to try to play poor Ollie. UTEP gets tons of money from the massive Texas Permanent University Fund - every year. And that’s on top of capital expenditure monies allocated by the Texas legislature. Over the past 2+ decades UTEP has received plenty of that in an effort to elevate the school. I’ll bet NMSU would happily trade places for funding sources and amounts.

Texans crying poverty to New Mexicans....That's a laugh. One of the richest states envious of one of the poorest over a couple bucks from a small casino...

If you build it, they still won't come. Hosting a second round play off game, undefeated, #1 ranked team in the nation, versus an old conference and in state rival, only 6,000 and some change showed up. Other games below 5K smh...

Makes a lot of sense, since they average far under 10k in attendance.

Williams Stadium Expansion Plans (2022).
"At the South end zone, 23 cabanas will be added above a newly graded berm with additional space for students and overflow seating."

I like the cabanas but the other berm is still kinda meh to me. It’s a cheap way to get more butts in the stadium which was probably the goal for the VT game.

I think the goal was to offset all of the seats they lose by replacing bleachers with chairback seats. We already don't sell out the stadium so they may only open the berm for big games like VT. Based on the interview with the AD I don't think they've decided how they'll use the berm yet.

I’d go slightly higher — say 35-40k — but definitely no need for anything beyond 40k.

We’ve got almost 31k. We could really lose another 5-6k and be fine. Most in the G5 just don’t have the demand for more.

As far as I know any money coming to UTEP from the state is not for sports but academics and the general upkeep of the university. Maybe they've changed that in that it can now be used for athletics but I don't think so, and I'm too lazy to go find out. Maybe one of the UTEP fans that come on here can enlighten me.

Great to see New Mexico State back in a conference. Great competitor for North Texas over many decades.

Smart move. I've been saying on here for a long time now that quality of fan experience is more important than quantity of fans because of affordable HDTV. Fans need a reason to go to game over watching it from their living room on a 70' HDTV with Dolby sound.

Throw in the time and money it takes to go to the game. Traffic, parking, cost of everything from parking to food, water, beer, you name it. If you make it a pleasant experience you get people back. If it's mediocre, it gets easier to just stay home with the big screen and you private bathroom just steps away.
