Is The Don Haskins Center the Best Location for the New CUSA Tourneys?
Since Frisco is no longer near a conference member beyond 2023, should the Conference USA tournaments move closer to member institutions?

If so, it stands to reason that UTEP-NMSU should be the hosts, since their schools are so close together and they both have good basketball tradition. They would support the tournament nicely.

Particularly, UTEP, where Conference USA's only National Championship banner hangs (and they are the Conference member with the most seniority).

The Don Haskins Center has good history and the conference could use some variant of "Glory Road" branding to give tournament week a special feel.

Now that Conference USA clearly has a basketball identity, Frisco seems like a bad fit for the league beyond 2023. It's devoid of basketball identity. I'd argue the conference offices should relocate closer to a conference member(s) as well.

Is The Don Haskins Center the venue to relocate (if that is indeed what the league decides to do)?

My guess is unless the league office gets moved, you’ll go to Frisco probably another year or two at least.

Truth is, the league seems to do what is convenient for the office instead of schools/fans.

That said, El Paso was the best host of the tournament while Marshall was in the league. Their only negative in 3.0 was location.

Agreed it will stay in Frisco for now.

El Paso should only host if the conference decides to rotate the hosting opportunity again or everyone bounces from the eastern half of the conference and CUSA expands further west or with more Texas teams with WAC teams. Where el paso becomes central in CUSA.

Personally I think it should be played at the brand new Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Relatively central to Texas teams, Liberty, FIU, WKU. Also for my own selfish reasons of being able to watch it. But fr tho, the arena is legit. Beautifully done. Even hosting some March Madness in the future.

I’d love to see AAC move it to there but with all the incoming teams in Texas, and it being basically UAB’s second arena and a total home-court advantage, I don’t see it leaving Dickies.

Nashville or Atlanta would be the best location if they want to keep it on a neutral court.

I think El Paso would be fantastic, but what about a rotation between El Paso and Miami/Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale? Both are great winter/spring destinations.

Vegas! Damn near every other conference out west holds their tourney there so why not a conference spread across the country.

Speaking of Haskins.. I finally watched Glory Road a couple weeks ago.

I don't know how much was truth vs Hollywood, but a good movie overall.

I would love for it to be held in El Paso. But mostly because being from Las Cruces, El Paso always feels like my second home. It would also give me another excuse to visit my family too. I think it would get good attendance. But I get that El Paso probably isn’t where the schools back east want to be traveling for the conference tournament.

From what I remember when the book and movie came out is that Haskins said he never made his decision to start five black players because he wanted to send a message or make a statement like the movie implied. He just believed they were the best five starters to face Kentucky in the national championship game. Another thing the movie doesn’t mention is the death threats he received after winning the NC that he sometimes wished it didn’t happen. The rest is pretty much accurate.

Am I the only one who wouldn’t mind having it in Shreveport? That’s as central as it can get for East and West schools. I also wouldn’t mind having our champ play in the Independence Bowl.

But as MinerInWisconsin suggests, Vegas baby!

I wouldn't mind something near the Gulf.

As long as it's not the Texas gulf coast, am I right?

Yea sure lets sign on for another 40 years the tournament being held in Texas while completely ignoring your anchors in basketball.

Nashville would also be a good choice depending on available facilities. Good for 2 fanbases and not bad for a 3rd.

The anchors for CUSA 4.0 are two fold. WKU/MTSU and/or UTEP/NMSU. Alternating Nashville and El Paso/Las Cruces.

I believe this is part of the hold-up in USM's exit. Judy is negotiating to hold all future tournaments in USM's lovely venue. 03-lmfao
