Kansas would’ve been a good expansion candidate if their football had been good, or even mediocre. Suddenly Leipold has them respectable. If that continues, let’s say both the SEC and Big Tem are interested in 2030 or so. What would Kansas prefer? SEC gets them Mizzou and OU back, and allows them to continue to regularly get games in Texas. But the Big Ten gets them Nebraska, a Midwest centric conference, and exposure to big markets on both coasts. Which would the Jayhawks prefer?

Their preference is the same as Missouri’s: whoever invites them first.

I'll guess that ultimately KU, MU, and CU are in the same conference again.

I’ll choose door #3: in the Big 10 with Missouri. The duo are at their hearts Midwestern land grants/state flagships and it makes sense for them both to be in the Big 10 with the other Midwestern land grants/state flagships.

The Big 12 is the appropriate conference for Kansas. They would gladly take an SEC or B1G offer, but I cannot imagine either of those happening.

If they had their choice then they'd probably prefer the B1G because of the better basketball pedigree. But after we're done pilfering the ACC, it will probably be a wash. And immaterial, b/c basketball would have to increase so much in importance that it's more valuable than football for KU to add value to the P2. KU is like a poor man's UCLA or UNC, all the basketball clout, but a whole lot less clout in football and KU lost the geographical lottery.

They're not OU's rival, but we've played them longer than anyone except OSU and Texas. We own them in football, but that 1988 basketball NC game still grates at me 35 years later. We haven't won in Allen Fieldhouse in 30 years (we didn't play there every year when B12 hoops was divided into North and South). I'd be happy if they got to the SEC, even though they are decidedly non-Southern. They belong with Mizzou and with us.

With that said, they're a midwestern flagship. They and Mizzou both belong in the B1G. The B1G is through expanding in the Midwest, though. When and if the B1G expands, they're looking for friends of USC/UCLA in the West first, and headed down the east coast second.

As Bryan mentioned, they've lost the geography lottery.

Big Ten. They could have a chance of being relatively competitive in football there. Not so in the SEC.

Big Ten is a better fit, but as others have said, they’d go to whoever invites them first (if they ever get invited at all).

KU should be in the BIG but would make sense in the SEC to round out the NW corner for the conference.

And OU was sooo close back in (2018?) when Buddy Hield went off for more than 40 points in AFH. I watched from home, and as a non-native Kansan, I really appreciated the crowd giving Buddy a Standing O after the game. 109-106, iirc. That was a game for the ages!

KU's rivals have been scattered to the winds. In the SEC, they'd have OU and MU (and CU if the two entered together); in the B1G, they'd have NU. Either way, they'd leave ISU, OSU, and KSU.
