Does every city have a sports guy that just reports random BS? In San Diego we are blessed with Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton. Used to be a play by play guy.

Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton could be heard all over Southern California on XTRA Sports 690, also known as the Mighty 690. He was entertaining. He did the play-by-play for San Diego State, USC, and the Chargers. XTRA 690 was a good source for San Diego sports if you were living in Orange, Riverside, or LA County.

They might have gotten that quote from Chun or one of the assistant ADs. And let's be honest, they SHOULD BE concerned about the trajectory of their Athletics Department. If they drop to the MWC sometime between now and 2030, they're in real trouble.

MWC schools will come into the PAC if need be, not the other way around.

Props for deftly deploying an Edward R. Murrow reference. Murrow was one of the journalism industry's all-time greats (for the younger posters who might not know). Sadly, the quality of the profession has taken a nosedive since Murrow left us in 1965. And as a journalist of more than 30 years, I see the decline — daily and painfully.

There is still plenty of quality journalism out there, but the barrier to entry is enormously lower today than it used to be.

There is clearly talent. But the bias and inconsistency (from both left-learning and right-leaning journalists) is troubling.

People seem not to understand that Monty got canned from his last broadcast job in 2016. He is a washed up radio guy running a YouTube channel out of his basement that nobody paid attention to until B12 stans started running with his garbage.

If hacksaw has a radio gig, he’s a step ahead of Monty. Also, Monty wasn’t even from Utah, it was just the final step on his downward career skid, and the only thing he learned from his years as an unsuccessful radio personality is that BYU fans will believe anything.

I liked his saying that he was no more important in presenting the news than when his voice carried only to the end of the bar. But then, that was before the news became treated, not as a public service, but as a program whose ratings mattered to network profits.

Good observation. The moment of pivot for journalism, I understand, took place in the late 1970s with the US hostage crisis in Iran. Suddenly news wasn't just a service a network provided as a condition of its broadcasting license. News programs were now profitable. Ted Koppel's late report was turned into a regular series, Nightline, and on things went.

None of which has anything to do with the Full Monty Show. Tabloids already existed, and printed whatever it took to make money off the rubes.

Great points — particularly about how we journalists have an obligation to present the news as a public service of sorts.

I miss the days of Walter Cronkite.

Monty had various radio gigs in the Bay Area from around 2005-2013. He worked in the SLC market from 2013-2015. He followed that up with a stint in Phoenix that ended in 2019 (I think there was a gap between those two jobs). His thing was trolling and making stuff up, which tended to wear thin after a few years everywhere he went. His run covering realignment is playing the same as the rest of his career. It takes a year for people to figure out he’s full of it, and then he’s canned and off to find some more rubes.

I think B12 viewers might have allowed him to quit his day job selling real estate and Yelp ads. I guess good for him that he found a new batch of gullible people.
