RE: Have you had to disown family members or friends due to politics?
Back to the original question, no I have never disowned family due to politics. I already have a dysfunctional extended family as it is, several have disowned each other due to pettiness. I am not going to add to the madness.

I wouldn’t say disown, but I have a few relatives who don’t like me. I have a sister and a couple cousins who are admitted socialists. They also hate cops and America.

If you hadnt decided to respond to me in a dickish manner, we wouldnt be here, would we? Did I miss anything between you and me?

Except you didn't answer the question, Einstein. It was a specific question about how Squid's relatives felt about Trump.

You could not possibly know the answer. So you chimed in with some generic answer that everybody on this board already knows.

Oh, and I really apologize about being a dick to you. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings, since you're always so polite to everybody.

One thing I’ve learned since Trump came along is how many people would rather take the path of least resistance when it comes to politics. People generally want to get along with others (social desirability) and the media has brainwashed millions of people that any defense of Trump/voting for Trump means you hate America and are bigoted. Nobody wants to be seen as that, so even if they prefer Trump they will never publicly say it.

Some have just totally given up on Trump because having to constantly defend him is exhausting if you aren’t willing to knock down liberal talking points every day.

No, disowning someone due to politics is stupid, imo, it just means you let politics define and control you. Now, I'll silence them on social media every now and then, especially near election time.

I wouldn't disown anyone for their politics. I would disown them for being a doosh. Leftists are mostly dooshes.

No need to apologize. Didnt hurt my feelings. Just saying the apparent major issue is now what a dick I am for even responding in kind to your initial churlish and dickish comment. That is a churlish and dickish comment to the apparent major transgression of answering a general empty rhetorical question on a thread. Got it.

I suggest you look up the phrase 'punch back in a similar manner'.

I got that, Mr Warrior. How dare I point out precisely what happened as a response.

And yep, Mr Warrior shows up in full Corporal Beavis mode. Imagine my shocked face. (btw, to make sure, my just previous sentence is also sarcasm.)

I suggest you get back to your rapture pursuit of trying to interject yourself with anything I type. lol.

Next person who responds off topic gets warning points. Stick to the topic, stay out of the pissing matches.

RE: Have you had to disown family members or friends due to politics?
I wouldn't say I disown family members, but there are several I feel no great desire to be around for any length of time.

I could go on with specific examples but essentially it boils down to a complete disconnect in interests and... shall we call it social awareness?

Let's take an uncle of mine for example. He used to be the funniest, most irreverent person in the family that instantly brightened the room whenever he made it to the family reunion, with a quick joke always at the ready. He served 20 years in the Navy, enlisted, and retired at 38, but turns out his barracks where he was stationed, in San Diego I think, was infested with black mold and now he's on permanent disability, stuck at home with nothing to do except pop pain killers, watch Fox News and play video games.

Over the course of the many past years, his funny jokes turned into awkward, biting comments that no one asked for, every conversation had to be pivoted to the latest TMZ-politics subject, he would be so angry all the time for no apparent reason. It was impossible to have a conversation of any sort without it turning into a political lecture, and god help you if he thought you disagreed in any way with him because you'd then be stuck in an hours long, one sided diatribe that might have just been Fox News on repeat. And when it was all over he'd exclaim "It's so good that we have these conversations! That's the problem with America is no one talks!" forgetting the fact, that it's just him talking and no actual conversation was had. He seemed simply happy to have the attention and the chance to say his thoughts, but nothing more. That's fine once or twice, but every single time?

He's not disowned by any means, but people aren't exactly chomping at the bit to include him because it's a guarantee of a socially awkward conversation at best, or a fire and brimstone accusation at worst. It's just exhausting and at the end of the day, you knew no matter what you said he'd not listen. It feels like being used just to be talked at.

A lot of people think we are near Civil War. We must not be that close if we’re not disowning family yet.

RE: Have you had to disown family members or friends due to politics?
I haven't really spoken to my sister over the past 7 years. She's a raging liberal, newly trans, and miserable. Most of the updates I get from her are from Twitter, and she's cut me and my parents out of her life for the most part.

It started in 2016 when Trump won... she was on Twitter, literally in tears because she thought Trump was going to round up gay people and put them in camps. She really and truly believed this.

Then in 2020, she went full COVID crazy. All the boosters. She was wearing masks outside in parks while reading... nobody within 100 yards.

Now in 2023, she blames transphobia for her financial problems (she works as a barista for a coffee company in Austin), rages against anything/everything sensible or traditional, and has surrounded herself with 20-something year old trannys (she is 33) to create an echochamber of despair and grievance.

The root of all of it? She was a band geek and a boy broke her heart in college. She then realized she was a lesbian. That wasn't cool enough, so she said "F" it, I'm a dude now, chopped off her boobs, and is on T therapy.

We have completely lost her.

Other than some dementia later in life (late 80's, early 90's), no.

She's really had issues with her self-esteem for a long time. She was bullied in high school because she was a 5'10" girl with red hair. She hated her body, so she decided she wanted to become a guy, I guess.

I also blame Twitter. She's been on Twitter for a long, long time and that's where she consumed most of her news for probably 15 years.

That was where she missed the boat. If she was 5'10" she should have just kicked their butts. Then nobody would bully her!

But sorry she and your family have those issues.
