We can argue about G5 conference football rankings all day, but the AAC clearly leads the G5 on the academic front.

Schools like JMU and FIU stick out like sore thumbs in the SBC and CUSA respectively.

then why is Memphis so close to UTSA in the rankings?

we're working on it...

https://www.memphis.edu/research/impact/.../uomr1.php

Quote:The University of Memphis has been named an R1 institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, putting the UofM in the top tier of research universities nationally. This milestone solidifies the University as one of two flagship public institutions in Tennessee. Carnegie R1 status is a credit to the vision, work ethic and dedication of the faculty, staff and leadership at the UofM. In addition to placing the UofM in a position to receive larger research grants, Carnegie R1 status has a significantly positive impact on the overall perception of the University.

one year later...

https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/inno...FY%202021.

Quote:The University of Memphis has landed a record haul of research funding, according to a press release put out by the university.

U of M secured $86 million in research awards in FY 2023, which ended June 30. That figure surpassed the previous record amount of $50 million attained in FY 2021.

Wow Tulsa dropped a long ways down the list. They were ahead of Temple just a few years ago, at least I think so.

U.S. News overhauled their ranking methodology after persistent bashing from sources like "Washington Monthly", a politically left leaning magazine which produces its own rankings. According to WM:
Quote:Since 2005, the Washington Monthly has ranked colleges based on what they do for the country. It’s our answer to U.S News & World Report, which relies on crude and easily manipulated measures of wealth, exclusivity, and prestige. We rank liberal arts colleges—four-year institutions that award almost exclusively bachelor’s degrees and that focus on arts and sciences rather than professional programs—based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service.
https://washingtonmonthly.com/2023-colle...ational-1/

According to "The Hill", a politically center newspaper:
Quote:U.S. News & World Report released its 2024 best college rankings list after making changes to how it would evaluate schools following criticism.

Changes to the ranking formula included focusing on social mobility and outcomes for graduating students, such as how many students on Pell Grants graduate from a particular school. U.S. News also kept some of the more controversial aspects of its formula, such as having universities give peer evaluations of one another.
https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4...%20school.

For its part, U.S. News published a long list of key changes to its methodology:

So what are they doing to make this miraculous ascension? Pretty soon they'll be Harvard.

EDIT: That's what the other rankings were about. They weren't about what each of the universities were supplying to these rankings. In other words, it wasn't bull****.

You don't move up 49 spots unless something miraculous happens. 85% of Houston's undergrads are commuters.

It's a commuter school! I'm calling bull****. Typical fuzzy math Houston.

It's because it takes in the last 6 years worth of data. Tulsa dropped a few majors and did finance cuts that had them drop like 80 spots in a year. That has all been dealt with and taken care of. Now we are in a better financial situation than we were before. We also now have the most national merit scholars per capita in the country. In about 2-3 years you will see us all of a sudden jump back up around to 50-70 range again....these rankings are dumb anyway. It has very little to do with the actual academics. It is very social based rankings. I take these things with a grain of salt.

USNWR changed its ranking methodology:

Quote:In short, five ranking factors that were in the previous edition's formula – alumni giving, class size, high school class standing, the proportion of instructional faculty with terminal degrees, and the proportion of graduates who borrowed federal loans – were removed from the formula to place greater focus on outcomes measures and to rely on data universally reported by schools or obtainable from third-party
sources.
