RE: ODU NIL
I received the Pride of ODU newsletter but nothing about merging accounts, what they are doing with people who signed up for the first iteration of the collective, etc.
I understand the need to plan things out, ensure everything is on the up and up, etc. but this isn't the smoothest rollout!

Just got this response back from SANIL.
“We will have instructions to existing members that goes out as quickly as possible. Working on that verbiage right now. As mentioned, some limitations exist in our platform switch that we dont want to rely on our old provider to handle. So keep an eye out for that.”
If you have any further questions about your membership or the transition, please feel free to send them to arryana@studentathletenil.com and billyray@studentathletenil.com

So did they get rid of the various perks based on the different levels of memberships? Does everyone get the same perks now, no matter what one donates?

So, what does this mean for us?
Is this money required to come from athletic funds? In theory, the student athletes bring a return on investment to the entire university, so can they be paid out of the general fund?
What are the Title IX ramifications?

We’re going to do an episode talking about the implications for this once our folks get more answers. But from what I was told, don’t expect many or any changes from how we are operating right now. This is a law that prepares Virginia to be ready for whenever the NCAA acts. But because of title 9 implications, the need to protect donations as tax deductible, and it not being an NCAA rule, we will likely maintain status quo for now to avoid getting caught in the crossfire in this ever changing landscape.

IMO This brings us one step closer to sanity in the college world. Universities will start offering multi-year contracts with athletes. Athletes will eventually be treated as employees of the university and be given salaries and benefits. This will stop the year-to-year roster turnover which is destroying the sport.

I was reading an article regarding the instant transfers, and a coach brought up that the degree no longer seemed to be as important. I agree. Between this rule, the transfer rule, and athletes becoming employees, I think we may see a day where the players arent even students at all. But for now, Id just like to see conferences implement salary caps in addition to multi-year contracts. Not that the SEC and MEAC need to have the same cap, but every school in a conference should have the same cap.

And who's going to police that? If you set a $50,000 limit, you know damn well some schools are going to offer a kid $60,000 shhhh. I'm talking like Sun Belt-level schools. Who polices and what's the penalty?

I’d guess it would be reported on a balance sheet? How do they do it in the pros?

That horse is already out of the barn. Who's regulating NIL? There's no cap on what athletes can be paid now. It's already a free market. The last card to drop is allowing universities to pay kids directly.
The pendulum will only swing back when the Power 5 schools beg the NCAA to reel it in. My guess is eventually they will want a salary cap in place like other major sports, but I don't expect that to happen in the near future.

I still can't understand how this NCAA rules stuff works. There are like 350+ members, but somehow like 3 of them get to make all of the rules. I get that the BCS conferences have more voting power, but don't the programs that aren't Ohio State, Alabama and Michigan have some say, and don't they have any interest in protecting themselves?

You have to separate where the pressure is coming from. Title IX, NIL, transfer rules, unionization, amateurism, etc. are coming from the legal system. The NCAA tried to maintain sanity but it hit them like a tidal wave. There is nothing they can do.
Other things like additional coaches, technology (pitch clock, wrist bands for pitch selection, etc.) are coming from the top programs.
Either way, anyone outside of the top 15-20 revenue earners take a hit. And the gap continues to widen.

I wonder if the collective group good have small line of food, at the Big Blue Room. They could invite coaches to talk and mingle with fans. The cost could be $100.00 per person. A die hard fan, would pay that. Proceeds to nil funds. Just a thought.

RE: ODU NIL
An official announcement is coming, but May 20th, 6pm at Afterglow brewing will be our first Pride of ODU/Monarchists event. Mike Jones will be there and we will be interviewing him and taking questions from the crowd. For members who can’t attend, we will take your question submissions.
Since this is the first of many events like this, this will be open to everyone. But in the future, these events will become members only.

Not a bad idea. You can put the hard sell on them to sign up for the collective while they are there. Maybe the breakfasts should be 1 for everyone and the rest for Pride members as well. Assuming MJ keeps that going.
