Brutal move in the SBC, but that guy is making miracles happen (maybe not on D...) ...but two places in a row - imagine what they'd do with our resources

Would be an absolute power move to do that to a fellow conference member. But he's very young and an absolute rising star. He was our OC for 1 year before going to Incarnate Word. Did just 1 year there before getting offered by TXST. He's got the profile of a coach that will be a P5 target very soon if he isn't already. If Baylor has another bad year, he'd definitely be in the mix.

no way.

he's a Texas guy and relies on the portal too much. We use the portal to supplement, not as the base of our recruiting.

I think the Texas part is definitely a bigger concern. You'd want some DMV recruiting ties. The portal part I think comes with the territory of both the current college football landscape and taking over a program that wasn't doing so well. If he went to JMU, the portal would more than likely be to supplement.

Well, you backfill with DMVN (carolina) guys....head coach closes the deals, but the assistants and coordinators really find much of the talent

I'd consider taking a gamble on Sunseri as HC over Haines, especially if we could move Kuntz to DC.

You guys aren't thinking Cignetti is bringing them with him?

Yes. i do.

he's had tremendous coaching loyalty at "lower" levels. I'm sure he'll want to take many of those guys with big pay bumps.

and i don't see JMU just offering to anyone on staff without doing a search to see what's available. By then, those guys (Kuntz, Haines, Shanahan, Sunseri) will likely be gone to IU

If hire an assistant of Cignetti's it will happen in next couple of days. If we haven't already been searching in back channels on who may be interested than Jeff is not doing his job. The names to interview on zoom in next day should already be done. If it is not someone has been asleep at the wheel.

Agree. Believe JB has a shortlist. The other half of the question is how quickly can the people who need to act get it done.

Must act quickly, that's for sure.
Look how quick everyone else is getting new coaches.
I certainly wouldn't mind getting Toledo's HC. That would be a really good move.

I see one and only one guy on Cignetti's staff that I would want as HC... Haines.

Perhaps it's a good thing Bourne hasn't officially retired yet. We are going to need him on this one.

This hire will go along way in answering how committed JMU really is to supporting a FBS football program. We already have our first few data points.

He's aware because he's in the running for the same jobs as HCCC. No way he comes here, which he sees as a lateral, his current salary is almost twice that of HCCC. He has everything in place there, why come in here and fight hard to keep players and commits just to stay the course? Makes no sense. If he doesn't get a P5 job in this cycle he'll stay where he's at and cash in next time.

It is absolutely imperative JMU establishes the interim guy to hold things over while we do a speedy search.

I believe Bowers came on after Withers to oversee and Houston left Fontel Minez(?) to hold things over until Cignetti. We have less than a week to act however.

You're not getting another G5 coach. Be realistic....

You're looking at FCS HC, P5 assistants, and potentially retreads coming off P5 failure (which JMU doesn't do).

RE: 2024 Football Coach Search
Looks like Cignetti was making $620k more or less. Indiana's last HC was making $4.9m per year. We just can't compete with that.

There was some talk of promoting from within with one of our coordinators. But Cignetti has brought them along with him at every stop, and the Coordinators at IU were making $400-600k, which is probably about what they'd be able to make here.

Seeing how the transition has gone, I have confidence this will be handled as best JMU can.

If we can offer what we were going to need to offer to Cignetti ($1.5 to $2 Million), G5 HC are completely reasonable.

Candle makes $1.2 million at Toledo and that is the highest in the MAC, so I am sure $2 million can sway plenty of G5 coaches.

Better chance of his dad being HC than him, he's most likely got to be an OC first before being the HC, or Shanahan bumps up and he takes the OC position but not going to leapfrog either coordinator on staff.

That’s assuming we could’ve raised that much for Cignetti… I love JMU but sometimes we overstate our abilities. I doubt we could get even $2 million for Cignetti. I am very sure the AD will have a hard time lining up $2 million from boosters for a new HC that we don’t know will succeed here.

No way he takes this lateral move to try and keep everyone here on board as well as all of the recruits or bring his from Toledo. They were the same 11-1 this year as we were, why go through the hassle when he's already in the running for the same jobs as HCCC? $2mil will do it? Or maybe we don't have that and $1mil to promote an assistant or bring somebody else will work.

Not that I’d suggest anything associated with Withers but was curious and saw Drew Mehringer is now TE coach at Oregon

2024 Football Coach Search
From The Athletic:
What’s next for James Madison?

The Dukes will be fine. Their program has thrived for decades amid coaching changes and hasn’t had a losing season since 2002. When Everett Withers rebuilt it into a contender and left, Mike Houston came in and won an FCS national title. When Houston left, Cignetti came in, reached a championship game and continued the success at the FBS level. This is a program with a winning culture and infrastructure in place to keep this going. It’s 19-4 since moving up to the FBS and into the Sun Belt.

Some potential names to fill the job could include Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, Florida A&M coach Willie Simmons, Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney, Maryland offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson and JMU’s Bryant Haines (defensive coordinator), Mike Shanahan (offensive coordinator) and Tino Sunseri (quarterbacks coach). — Chris Vannini, college football staff writer
