What’s next for James Madison?

The Dukes will be fine. Their program has thrived for decades amid coaching changes and hasn’t had a losing season since 2002. When Everett Withers rebuilt it into a contender and left, Mike Houston came in and won an FCS national title. When Houston left, Cignetti came in, reached a championship game and continued the success at the FBS level. This is a program with a winning culture and infrastructure in place to keep this going. It’s 19-4 since moving up to the FBS and into the Sun Belt.

Some potential names to fill the job could include Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins, Florida A&M coach Willie Simmons, Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney, Maryland offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson and JMU’s Bryant Haines (defensive coordinator), Mike Shanahan (offensive coordinator) and Tino Sunseri (quarterbacks coach). — Chris Vannini, college football staff writer

take that list with a grain of salt. It's just repeated from a JMU blog from a few hours ago. it likely has no basis in fact.

names will start to come out soon.

haha...I swear, it is the same candidates for every job sprinkled in with school's coordinators.

Bourne recently has liked to hire people with proven HC experience. As much as I'd like to keep Haines, it would have to be predicated on keeping a lot of staff around which we won't be able to do.

Yeah this is literally just throwing out an aggregation of names that have been floated for other jobs, sprinkle in 3 guys on staff. Chris doesn’t have any unique insight at the moment.

Next 48 hours will be interesting.

Do we think the next Tweet will be JMU has retained Parker Search? Monitoring the situation? Bourne talking about how exceptional of an institution JMU is?

I think it's pretty telling what our resources and culture are/can be. Every coach that left us (granted we were FCS) before failed pretty miserably at Texas State (?) and ECU. Cignetti is a great coach, but I can't see him making a perennial loser at IU anything more than maybe a 4-6 win team in that conference.

In 3 years he'll be on the market again, and +$12m richer for it I guess.

There will be a search firm. That is a given.

RE: 2024 Football Coach Search
Yes, I disagree and think we will have some G5 head coaches interested in coming here. There will be at least a couple good ones on our list. I am sure some Sun Belt head coaches would love to coach here. Whether we want them is another question.

These coaches know that if they win here big for a few years, they can get a big payday from P5.

I'm sure Bourne and co have been anticipating this is a possibility and I'm sure they have been working with the firm on a list of names just in case.

NC State and UNC will have him on their list in a couple years.

Bourne should already have had a list and be vetting those guys right now. Last year Liberty lost their HC and backfilled with Coastal's HC and Coastal backfilled Chadwell in record time. can't drag your feet on search firms, that work should've already been done.

RE: 2024 Football Coach Search
There is a big part of me that likes the idea of going after an FCS coach like Chesney, then taking whatever the salary difference would have been between the hire and Cignetti, and using it to keep By.

In my mind proven winners at lower levels are better than big name coordinators, and probably cheaper, too.

What we don't want is to be starting over in both football and basketball, so it is crucial that we lock up By.

Or, he said he wanted to coach an other 15 years or so and then retire. The money he's going to earn at IU will speed up the process when 4 years of that salary equates to 15 here.

I had not thought about it that way- good point. In the midst of a 7-0 start I had not yet considered coach BY being poached.

Nothing but small school experience, wouldn't have the first clue on navigating the larger recruiting areas, NIL or portal and would be bringing assistants with him used to teaching PhysEd classes to supplement their paltry salaries while recruiting the local prep schools. Sorry, not a fit right now.

Jay Hill from BYU, formerly weber. Believer his name was tossed around prior to Cignetti getting the job.

THIS - if they retain a search firm we are screwed, no good candidate will be left in the next 4-6 weeks
