No one wants to play in a garbage bowl. That's not Norvell's fault.

While I wouldn't call the Orange Bowl a garbage bowl, this year it's a step down from the CFP FSU thought they deserved. Next year, the ACC will apparently be guaranteed a top 4 spot and a first round CFP bye. But the financial difference will still be there.

Norvell would do well to listen to Alabama and go if offered. The difference in income between FSU and the SEC is only going to grow until FSU is able to get out of the ACC and into the SEC.

Flipping that, if Norvell already knows FSU's plan/timetable to get into the SEC, he decide to hold on.

From Football Scoop:

Kalen DeBoer, Mike Norvell, Tommy Rees among interviews for Crimson Tide's replacement to Nick Saban

Two other names with some measure of traction in the search: former Broyles Award-winning Alabama assistant coach Mike Locksley and current Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, per sources in upper levels of college athletics administration.

Pete Thamel reports the expectation is that Norvell and DeBoer will emerge as the focal points of the search:

Oh man, I really hope they hire Norvell. What would it take to pry him away from FSU? $100m? $120m? To immediately become the 4th or 5th best coach in the SEC?

Deboer isn't leaving Washington.

Of course, you never want to be the one who replaces the legend. And unlike Paterno, who wasn’t at or about at the top of his game when he left, Saban is/was.

Also, O'Brien was brought in under unusual circumstances where PSU just wanted a coach whose teams would be competant, but above all else avoid additional scandals for the program for obvious reasons... not like they were eligible for a conference title game or bowl, anyway, his two seasons.

Yeah, only I remember that second year and the fans/Joe-bots being pretty merciless. It got pretty ugly when they lost to Indiana for the first time since joining the conference. I suspect he got on the phone with his agent after that and said "we're done here."

But Alabama will be so much worse. Even before Saban, that was a place still figuring out its place in the SEC and national landscape chasing after a repeat of the Bryant-era times. They got it and more with Saban...it's only going to get worse for someone down there.

For 8 figures a season guaranteed plus endorsements and a nearly unlimited operating budget you realize the only people that care about that stuff are fans that don't like the school, right?

At its worst, it's the all time guaranteed Golden Parachute generational wealth job.

We are posting on a message board that spends most of its time dreaming about what if's in realignment in 2036 and wild assed guesses about media contracts. I'll hold off on throwing stones.

I'm surprised there's not more interest in Urban Meyer. Maybe he has already told them he's not interested. Otherwise, it would seem like at least a phone call wouldn't hurt.

Tommy Rees would be in the mix if this was a year or two from now. They love him down there.

I mean any skinny white kid who could pull of the look with corn rows without being accused of cultural misappropriation has my vote.

I'm personally surprised at the reported final candidates of Norvell, DeBoer and Rees. None have SEC head coaching success and each come with their potential red flags. Rees is perhaps the most shocking, as he does not have any head coaching experience. DeBoer has never coached in the SEC, let alone the South. Norvell has built two high level programs at Memphis and FSU but also does not have any experience in the SEC.

Was Lanning's buyout too high from Oregon? Same with Kiffin?

Rees is at a very similar point in his career as Marcus Freeman was when Brian Kelly left.

What about Urban? He'd win multiple national championships and judging by the reports it's like he longer exists.
