No one knows how this hire will work out, but there is some reason for optimism. Mike Jones checks a lot of boxes, and I love that he's an ODU guy. Maybe if he does well he will have some loyalty to us.

Excited to hear him speak later this morning.

As someone who has bemoaned our complete lack of recruits from the DMV and especially the Catholic League, which is loaded with really good teams -- DeMatha, St. John's, Gonzaga, Good Counsel, Paul VI, Bishop McNamara -- and I'm probably forgetting 1 or 2, I'm very excited about MJ. There's no reason ODU and the DMV can't have a very healthy relationship, to everyone's benefit.
FWIW, I've started listening more and more to the Scott Jackson Show on 94.1 from 3-7. Yesterday, he had on a guy who for years has attended HS BB games with Jones, sat beside him, and watches how he analyses players and strategy. Two games a week. He says Jones has a brilliant, instant, analytical mind that he's not seen before. Yes, it's hyperbole, but I also think there's some truth to it. Say what you will, but after years of watching DeMatha and St. John's dominate the DC Catholic League, the other schools -- and the growth of the DC area -- made their basketball teams a priority. Helps in recruiting new students. Competition is very, very fierce.
If we can get a few players from that league going forward, we're going to be good. I mean, I don't care where they come from as long as they can play, but Catholic League a great foundation for success.

Its so great feeling the excitement and optimism around this hire. Its so different than when we made the last hire. Im seeing former players, and old school fans who had given up, coming out of the woodwork to proclaim how happy they are with this hire. Cant wait for the press conference!

I wonder if he will finish up his duties at Md. before fully joining ODU ?

Ditto. Mike Jones LFG!!!!!

I think he is going to be a GREAT fit. He has history with the school. Coached DeMatha and is tied into DMV recruiting circles. Went VT and now MD. The knock on him is no HC experience at the College level but I think he overcomes that with connections. The other ace in the hole is that Blaine is on staff with ODAF and he could be a GREAT mentor that is onsite and could help him with move into the HC position with wisdom/experience and contacts. Almost the coach’s coach who doesn’t come in from time to time - he’s there along with him. I think he brings relative youth - great recruiting - and excitement for the fanbase. It is remarkable that we finished dead last in the conference and led the conference in attendance at about 6K a game. If we were winning - the place would be sold out or close every game. We drew more than JMU who is in a brand new arena and was nationally ranked. More than App St. who finished in first place. That’s impressive and exciting. He's walking into a great potential situation.There is also the Top 50 guy who played at DeMatha / Went to VT and entered the portal for next year. We have the best recruiting class ever signed by ODU with a couple of the highest ranked recruits to ever sign with ODU. If Jones can keep this class together and bring a few others - it’s on! I'm excited and haven't been for way too long.

I was very impressed with the way he handled today's press conference.
The confidence, the honesty, the love of ODU, the passion to succeed, etc.
I'm really starting to love this hire and have faith that we can get back to winning.
I have criticized Wood for many things, but so far it seems him and Hemphill made a great hire.
