2024-2025 Basketball Schedule
Never too early to get this started.
Here is what we have on the docket so far:
v. William and Mary
@ Radford
v. Northeastern
Cayman Islands Classic (Thanksgiving Week)
2 MAC/Sunbelt Challenge Games (1 in Decemberish, 1 in February)
The Cayman Islands Classic will drop the full team list in April most likely with a bracket coming June/July.
Mike Jones has indicated that he wants to schedule more Power 5 teams, specifically those that can come to Norfolk. With his connections, I would look for a game with Virginia Tech and schools around DC (American, Georgetown, Maryland, the A10 crew if their conference is back to earth )...
Future years:
2025 - @ William and Mary

Are we sure we're getting the MAC games? There's only 12 MAC teams and we landed in #14 this season. Might not get to be a part of it next year

It is based on NET Rankings, currently ODU is 12th in the Sun Belt in NET (ULM & Coastal are behind). Coastal winning another tourney game may jump them over ODU but as of now they are slotted for the challenge next year.

RE: 2024-2025 Basketball Schedule
I doubt we get VT or UMD on the schedule. Hokies played one true road game this srason...at Auburn. Maryland played one road game...at Villanova.
If these schools have room for one game, it is unlikely to be Old Dominion.
I'd be happy to start with VCU and go from there.

I don’t care what kind of connections Mike Jones may have, no P4 schools are coming to Chartway. Heck, we can’t even get an A10 school to come to Chartway.

I am not saying they do. However, I think our athletic department should engage in conversations with them. Maybe even do a football/hoops combo series with some of them. Some of these schools would also help out ODU's strength of schedule if they were added. UVA, VT, and VCU have no reason to run and hide from ODU in hoops. Unfortunately, two of those schools have ran and have showed no desire to play in Norfolk.

Yes not sure if it’s next year or the year after but we are taking with VCU and Richmond to restart home and home. It’s wasn’t VCU and Richmond’s decision not to schedule ODU. It was the A10 mandate to only play home games unless it was P4 and it backfired.

Do any schools have a football/hoops combo deal? It's an interesting concept, but I've never heard of one.

I do not know of any off the top of my head, but with the way things are going, this is something our admin should consider and think about. After all, strength of schedules are important still in both of these sports. It just baffles me how we seem to play teams like UVA/VT in baseball and in other olympic sports, but we do not play them as frequent in football/hoops.
Schools that have both sports that are in respectable group of 5/FCS conferences should consider doing more deals like this. Schools like ODU, Temple, JMU, Uconn, FAU, USF should all form some of these alliances together to help each other out.

Take a look at our contract with VT in football, we have played each other 5 times and have 8 more remaining on the contract through 2031. UVA we've also played and while theycanceled on us they're coming to us in 2028
Basketball isdifferent though and I agree. IDK if UVA's weird relationship with Jeff Jones is the reason we haven't played them but I feel like there should be some sort of VA OOC rotating schedule with how many great basketball programs there are in the state. Getting VT and UMD to the Ted would be a win for Mike Jones. P5's don't usually travel to mid-majors anymore but getting these programs to Norfolk would be huge. I remember being in attendance in 2010/11 season where we hosted Georgetown. Even though we lost it felt like a big-time college basketball game. Would love to have those types of games back in the Ted

UVA has not visited and played in Norfolk since 1993 in mens hoops. Conveniently, their football team has not played here yet either, and wont do so until 2028. However, if UVA goes to the Big 10 or SEC before 2028, chances are, they will try to buy that game out with us. UVA has been scared to play us in hoops, even way before Jeff Jones arrived here. This even happened during the Jeff Capel and Blaine Taylor eras.
Its amazing how the landscape in college hoops are now. Mid major teams get dogged by the sports media for having weak schedules, yet, the P4 teams are scared to play them on the road anywhere. The mid majors are not given a fair chance to boost their schedules with matchups with P4 teams because the P4 teams are willing to turn them down for matchups.
Schools like UVA have no business choosing to play us in every other olympic sport, but then turn around and refuse to play us in football/hoops.
This is not the only example of dodging/running and hiding in college sports. Up until 2023 when they played at Utah, the Florida Gators had not played a true out of conference road football game outside the state of Florida since 1989.

Paul Webb Memorial Tournament.
If A10 relents on playing us, then VCU or Richmond or Mason every year (rotate). An ACC school (Wake?) and a Big 5 team (Penn, La Salle, St Joe's, Temple).
Just a thought
