I don't understand why UK fans are unhappy with Drew as the #1 candidate. How many coaches have they ever had who came with a national championship to his credit?
What is Calkins' problem with him (I never read that artical)?
He claim other coaches didn’t like Drew because he was a negative recruiter

What a stupid reason not to hire someone. Seems like you’d want a coach that the others didn’t like. That means he’s doing something right and winning

I'm sure Calipari has never negative recruited (who Drew would have replaced).

What? The SEC has become a pretty solid basketball league. Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas & OU coming, Tennessee... Florida can be good any given year.
I mean, he's not entirely wrong. The B12 is consistently the highest rated bb conference the past few years and the SEC is 3rd or 4th. Now the conference realignment might adjust that next year.
Auburn, UTK, and Alabama are definitely playing above their norms. Would seem to depend on how long Pearl, Barnes, and Oats are there. How many modern era F4's do those schools have - and how many do they have excluding their current coaches?
Texas and OU are also football-first schools who tend to roller coaster in basketball.
I think Arkansas and Florida are the only ones really with any big time success over multiple coaches. But they are still football-first and are a bit down right now.

Maybe he takes the job but he’s not in Lexington nor was he today.
Private jets can get from Waco to Lexington pretty quickly, posted photos or not.
Lots of chatter that he was indeed in Lexington.
But now it looks like he just parlayed that to a raise at Baylor - probably what the booster lunch was for.

No doubt it is typically a better conference but it is not a massively dramatic drop from the B12 to the SEC to the point that it would influence a coach that has won a NC in the Big12 already...

I’m calling Greg Marshall still. But either he or Beard at UK would be a huge soap opera in the making. It would either be a huge success or a colossal disaster.

IF, he is interested in coaching again, some lucky school out there will get him and they will experience great success. Same with Will Wade.
If Penny has the best interest of the school in mind, he should be making a plan to help the school bring in one of these guys. Big If. It won't happen. And it's unfortunate. When Will Wade and Greg Marshall are both winning big at a high D1 someday, we can reference back to this moment in time.
The fact that Marshall is still getting paid, hopefully keeps him on the market for a couple more years.
Pearl and Wade played outside of NCAA rules. These days, big whoop.
Freeze had his thing with escorts. I don't want him, but it is something you can easily come back from. Ask Pitino.
Marshall beat up staffers and players. You do see the difference don't you?
Of course, Beard didn't even have to sitout a full year before an amoral athletic dept grabbed him. So Marshall will likely end up somewhere soon. Now it remains to be seen if he will be able to recruit after all the stories. We will see. But I just don't want the baggage with our next coach (that is, in 5 years or so).
Gregg Marshall resigned in November, 2020, almost 3 1/2 years ago. He was given a settlement (a "forced resignation"), so he wasn't officially "fired for cause". He probably would have been fired had he not taken the settlement.
3 1/2 years is a long time to be out of the public eye with no "show cause" penalty enforced (aka Bruce Pearl). I recall Pearl doing TV during the 3-yr show cause period, so he was still in the public eye.
If Gregg Marshall wants to coach again, I suspect he'll end up at a lower-level school to rejuvenate his coaching career (aka Hugh Freeze to Liberty), and then get a bigger job once he's had success with his restart.

Or Kiffin at FAU (more AAC relevant).
