Chick-fil-a (never got that name) bowl pays about the same as Gator. So it's feasible that the Gator gets #5,6,7. Jacksonville is warmer than Nashville or Memphis in January. I think the Sun bowl is too far, even if the crowd is local. Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, Orlando, Tampa, DC would all be better locales IMHO.

Because we share some bowls with other conferences, it's variable. But, in a word, beyond the BCS bowl, terrible:

2. Gator Bow/Sun Bowl.........$ 2.5 million/$1.9 million
3. Meineke Car Care Bowl......$ 1.0 million
4. International Bowl.............$750,000
5. PapaJohns.com Bowl..........$300,000
6. St. Pete bowl ..................$1.0 million

What we actually got last year was:

St. Pete ... $1 million
Sun ......... $1.9 million
Car Care ... $1.0 million
PJ ............ $300,000
INTL ......... $750,000

Put it this way: The SEC and Big 10 get ALMOST as much money from the CapOne bowl ALONE as the Big East gets from ALL of its non-BCS bowls PUT TOGETHER.

It's pathetic, and a major money-gap between us and conferences like the SEC, Big 10, and Big 12.

Yes, the notion that the SEC or Big 10 would leave the biggest-paying non-BCS bowl, located right in the heart of Florida recruiting country and with Disney World and the beaches right nearby, is crazy. I don't know how these ideas get started ...

Actually, the reverse is true. The Big-12/Texas Bowls are increasing their payouts...the Big-12 fans--plus their alumni--will pack the Big-12/Texas Bowls with attendance and that drives up the money. Cotton Bowl will have a $4 million payout and Alamo is now at $3 million.

CUSA will undoubtedly get booted out of Texas Bowl where Big-12 will probably move to upgrade...The Texas Bowl, its stadium and attendance, are on a par with Alamo. My guess is the Big-12 isn't done yet and I suspect the Insight matchup of Big-12/Big 10 is moved to Houston and the Texas Bowl.

The Insight might become a Big-12 matchup against MWC....and Big-12's 8th team parked in proposed new Dallas Bowl in the old Cotton Bowl Stadium or Independence. My guess is Big-12 ditches Independence as it doesn't like this bowl and I suspect SEC will make a move also to a better bowl.

ACC now has problems with Emerald Bowl as PAC probably cannot fill this spot...ACC might end up traveling all the way from east coast to west coast to play a 6-6 MAC team in Frisco.

The Chick a Fill pays MORE than the gator. The Gator pays about 2.4 mill per team and it would have to raise it to 3 mill to compete with Chick and Outback and you know both those bowls are not going to sit still and have the Gator take their spots.

So the question becomes does the gator pay $3 mill to get in most years the 5-6 SEC team? Yes theyll make money but they will lose prestige

Not as easy as you think when it comes to the gator, money is obviously inportant but they want to be still seen as being part of the next 4-5 bowls after BCS regarding prestige. They look at Liberty as below them and getting the SEC 5-6 will drop their prestige as a major bowl.
At the end I think the Gator wants a top #3 no lower than 4rth from any conference every year.

Big-12 Bowls?
1. BCS/Fiesta
2. Cotton
3. Alamo
4. Gator
5. Holiday
6. Insight
7. Independence
8. Texas

Alamo replaces the Holiday in the Big 12 pecking order. I suspect most Big 12 schools would prefer San Diego to San Antonio, but money talks.

But San Antonio is much closer to most Big 12 teams than San Diego...so for the bowl's sake...I don't think they can survive WITHOUT having a contract with the Big 12.

San Antonio (especially the RiverWalk) is a great bowl location...and while San Diego is a good one too...most Big 12 fans have to fly for that "minor" bowl game...while 4-5 Big 12 teams (and a few more) are within driving distance of San Antonio.

One thing to consider also is that the Alamo Bowl was "moved" to Saturday night, Jan 2nd at 9pm for this coming season with a Big Ten team playing in it...so while this year Jan 2nd falls on a good date (i.e. Saturday night...no NFL games), no clue what dates the Alamo Bowl will look at in the future.

1. Rose Bowl
2. Capital One Bowl
3. Outback Bowl
4. Alamo Bowl
5. Champs Sports Bowl
6. Insight Bowl
7. Motor City Bowl

Guess that Champs, Insight, and MC all get a higher Big 10 team now, but surely the Big 10 will scramble to replace the Alamo's loss? Clearly, the dominoes haven't all fallen yet ...

I know that the people on this board probably won't like hearing this, but the potential "winner" in this scenario is the Gator Bowl because the Big Ten now is a free agent with its #4 selection (which is almost always a great drawing team and bowls with open slots are going to court heavily). The Big Ten isn't going to downgrade its old Alamo Bowl slot to a lesser-paying bowl when its reputations for traveling fans and TV drawing power are higher than ever. I never thought that the Big Ten would trade its higher paying and better located Orlando and Tampa bowl games in order to go to Jacksonville, but essentially swapping out the Alamo in order to get another New Year's Day bowl game for its #4 team is a net positive (even though San Antonio is a far superior travel destination from a fan perspective). This all assumes that the Gator Bowl would be willing to move the date and/or time of its game in order to avoid the time slot exclusivity clause that the Big Ten has with the Capital One Bowl.

While I do agree with you that the BigTen could be in the picture with their #4-#5 the reality is that for the gator is not worth the gamble of increase pay. jacksonville is SEC territory a Big Ten team is NOT that attractive to the general population unless you get Ohio State or Michigan.
Iowa and Wisconsin travel well but they wouldnt be draws for the general population. I gurantee you that if the Gator ends up with a BigTen or Big 12 (4-5 selection) it will not last past that 4 year period because they will suffer at the gate. The SEC is their big goal

There's a massive difference between the Big Ten and Big 12 when it comes to traveling to Florida. While the Big 12 is largely Texas-based and the attraction of traveling from warm weather Texas to warm weather Florida in January is muted, Florida is the #1 location for Big Ten alums both in terms of living and traveling outside of the conference footprint by a wide margin. I agree that Jacksonville and the state of Florida is definitely SEC territory, but the Big Ten-to-Florida connection is about as strong as you can get for conference that isn't actually geographically in that state. That's why the Big Ten has 3 high paying bowl games in Florida already. San Antonio is less of a natural Big Ten travel destination compared to Jacksonville, yet the conference always sent a huge contingent of fans there even in the heart of Big 12 country. Thus, the Big Ten on average is going to draw a whole lot better at the Gator Bowl than a comparable Big 12 team.

I don't doubt that the Gator Bowl would love an SEC team, but it's likely a #4 or above SEC team won't be available for the foreseeable future. The next best thing if you're running a bowl in Florida would be a Big Ten team, which is now unexpectedly available. At the very least, the Gator Bowl has a whole lot more negotiating power when talking with the Big East and ACC with a Big Ten #4 lurking out there than it did a couple of days ago.

Yes, the Florida bowls (and their host cities) LOVE the Big 10 teams because they bring in OUT-OF-TOWN snowbirds in large numbers.

Ideally, a Florida bowl wants an SEC anchor, and then a Big 10 team, followed by a Big 12 team. But if the Gator can't get the SEC, a Big 10/Big 12 matchup looks much more appealing than Big 12/Big East.

As you note, the Big 10 will NOT be a net loser in this post-Alamo reshuffling. They are too big and travel too well. Someone else will be booted out of a similar-sized bowl to make room, and that could be the Big East.

When Big East honchos talk about negotiating bowl deals from a "position of strength", i wonder what planet they are broadcasting from ..

Disagree...especially if its the 5th or 6th placed team in the Big 12.

If the Big East "reforms" into a new football conf...that might give their #2 and even #3 pick more valuable to any FLA Bowl...especially compared to a 4th-6th place team from the Big 12.

Big 12 "lost" the Tangerine/Champs Sports Bowl slot to very bad traveling attendance.

As noted...FLA is basically home to SEC and ACC Bowl Games...with Big East hopefully holding onto a some share (or all of it) of the Gator Bowl...as the Big East can't afford to be stuck with just the St Pete Bowl (unknown future...while Gator Bowl will most certainly be around) in FLA.

I dont doubt that the BigTen has teams that travel well, but the reality is that they are NOT attractive to the general population in Jacksonville, specially if they would go head to head vs Capital One bowl with an SEC team playing.
As I said if its Ohio State, Penn State or Michigan those are teams that have a national following. Wisconsin, Iowa travel well but would do ZIPPO to excite the Jacksonville community. If the gator gets stuck with Purdue or Northwestern its a bad fiasco. I dont see the gator upping their payout to end up with BigTen 4-5

All those Big 10 fans would love the Gator bowl. They would fly into Orlando and drive up for the Gator bowl on game day. I think it would do well, there are so many Big 10 fans in Florida, and more importantly that want to travel to Florida. Orlando could host a 3rd bowl game and Tampa could host a 2nd bowl game and those bowls would do fine. Just give them an excuse to go to Florida in January. St.Pete should try to get Big 10 #8 or 9
