RE: Improvements you'd like to see for the next game
I will say as a long time Steelers fan, I love the improvement in the physicality of our team. This is one of the most physical teams I can remember. And that is clearly a product of our coach. If you don’t play physical, then you don’t play for us. I’m 100% on-board w/that philosophy. It is the mentality of all great teams.

Granted Mack is lower this year but 5.8 would not be an effective passing game either. When Wolff has been in, he hasnt looked like a guy that can just dominate the team through the air. Maybe Im wrong, but he hasn't shown it.

I really doubt Wolff is lighting things up in practice and the staff is refusing to start him.

We don't need to be dominant in the air, we just need to be a threat to open up running lanes. Mack ain't doing that.

Our running game has been fine with Mack. Do we know it would not be hurt going to Wolff?
Do we know that Mack is hurting the running game by being an ineffective passer? Wolff didn't seem to hurt the running game when he has been in there, but we won't really know for sure until he starts a game. You don't alway have to be sure about something to try it.

Its not likely that someone is going to perform differently in practice than they do in the game. We have faced 2 defenses that would have overwelmed our offense with any of our QBs under center.

The advantage of Mack is that it is another runner that teams have to prepare for. It gives them an numbers advantage in the box.

I would probably go Wolff but I would not expect good things from him. He hasn't looked ready. At this point, I still trust the staff to play the best players. They see these guys every day. We see them for 3 hours a week.
Its not likely but it happens enough that it's a thing. Some players perform on the big stage, others don't. It wouldn't be the first time an ODU coach made the wrong QB choice. Yes Mack has played some tough defenses but ots not like he tore it up against Hampton. He was 11-22 and 162 with 1 TD. You defer to the coaches and that's fine. I question everything until its proven one way or the other.

Thats 7.4 yards per attempt, which is decent. And 1 passing touchdown plus 3 rushing touchdowns. Hard to say a guy didn't look good bc he only had 50% completion percentage with 3 drops.

I’d like to see better completion percentages and passes longer than 5 yards more frequently. Less penalties and better tackling. Oh.. and a win.

I didn’t say he didn't look good. But in a game where we completely dominated Hampton in almost every facet of the game, we did not in the passing game.

1. Mack is an ok runner and not so great passer.
2. Wolff is a great passer but pretty much a statue in the pocket.
3. Poff is a very good passer and mobile as hell.

Go with Poff!

Wolff is good but he’s still developing. If he was Michael Vick and he could single handedly win the conference then yeah sure.

At this point let’s let Mack assume the injury risk this season while Wolff continues developing and we improve the surrounding cast. Personally I’m in no rush.

We did go with TH as a true freshman. So it’s been done before.

If Poff was as good as the two guys ahead of him combined (3, if you include Smartt), don't you think he'd be playing?

The backup QB is always the most popular on campus.

In this case, the 4th or 5th string QB.

What im seeing is a team that doesn't have a solid consistent line and i do not believe we have the quarterback of the future. Thinking some changes will be coming. May have to wait until next year.

I would think playing time is situational. With kids eligible to play in 4 games, we might see Poff at some point later in the year, if for no other reason to give him some live action PT.

I went back and looked at him and he does seem to move pretty well and be able to make some fairly quick decisions. So he might get some time and i hope he doesn't get run over back there.

I’m curious what you were looking at. HS tape or are you seeing something more recent?

Give RR a little time. He's new at this Head Coach thing, you know. :03-wink:

This game coming up Saturday against Buffalo will be a great game to measure our team truly for the first time this year. They are not a pushover. They rank 89th on FBS CBS power rankings and they have crushed Wagner, got shut out by Nebraska and gave Coastal Carolina a tough game. This will be a game that is winnable, but will be tough. We will see where we are at. We need to be there screaming and helping our team get this building block win.

Buffalo is a 12 point road Favorite. A win would be a nice improvement

I'd just like to see improvement throughout the year, but we aren't going to get over the hump without a QB that can keep the offense on the field in a 3rd and long situation at least some of the time. The longest 3rd down conversion we had was for 4 yards. That ain't going to cut it.

Has Poff been put on scholarship?

I only see two possibilities: 1) Knowing this is a lost year, RR has a secret plan to play Poff the last 4 games of the year, to maintain his eligibility or 2) Poff isn't as good as the other QBs on the roster.

I highly doubt it's number 1, because RR doesn't like to lose and I find it hard to believe he isn't putting the guys out there that give him the best chance to win.
