I disagree with our coach on this particular decision. He should allow Taylor to transfer to any school other than known future opponents and BE schools. Otherwise, it makes Fuente look petty and vindictive to those outside our program.

Fuente is doing things his way; let it ride.

Reed can go play at Ok St, Okla, Miss State, Vandy, Tenn, LSU, Arkansas, La Tech, WKU, Murray State - plenty of options. But he has to know those schools will have other QBs competing for the starting job as well.

I totally understand the TIGERS making restictions for Big East schools as well as C-USA East and those members (Houston, SMU) about to join the Big East. I also understand MTSU and Ark State; they are on the OOC schedule this year.

Now, personally I would let Reed go to Tulsa or UTEP since MEMPHIS does not play them in the C-USA West rotation this year. I also concur that restricting Mississippi is a head scratcher UNLESS there is some form of payback here we are not aware of. Payback against the school in Oxford or the new head coach down there.

COGS Did anybody ever consider that it may be because of his knowledge of the system being installed by Fuente ? Taylor was the QB and could give very detailed info to a new team. He should be under very heavy restrictions.

When I saw the restriction list, this was the first thing I thought of. I'm not sure why Mississippi is on there, but the rest makes sense.

Most coaches place transfer restrictions on schools in their own conference. The unusual fact that we will play in two different conferences over the remainder of Taylor's career makes the list look more restrictive than normal. It's not that we don't want to play against Taylor, it's that we don't want Taylor using his knowledge of our system to help our opposing coaches formulate a game plan to use against us.

Oklahoma Transfer

"OU hired John Blake, whose offense under coordinator Dick Winder required a more mobile quarterback. Instead of bailing, Fuente stuck with the Sooners because coaches reassured him he would fit their scheme.

He struggled in the few games he started in 1996 and split playing time with Eric Moore. Fuente was the starter heading into the 1997 season, but a shutout loss to Northwestern in the opener was the beginning of the end.

"Obviously, it was a pretty tough time," Fuente said. "We weren't very good, and things were in a bit of disarray."

When the season ended, Fuente transferred to Division I-AA Murray State in Murray, Ky., where former OU assistant Denver Johnson was head coach.

"There was no question that he was a hurting boy," said Bill Blankenship, Fuente's coach at Union and now head coach at the University of Tulsa. "He was incredibly disappointed. He loved OU ... but he just knew that there was another way to do this."

I'd say that was pretty similar. Taylor will be fine, but this is unfortunate. Despite what you may read, he was not competing for the starting job this year. All is fair in love and war and football?

The one I'm having trouble understanding is Ole Miss. To me, that is not in the best interest of the kid and has absolutely nothing to do with protecting the interest of Memphis Football.

If Hugh Freeze wants him and we don't have to play against him, it smacks of somebody not wanting to look bad if he goes down there and does well.

Kinda hard on the new coach aren't you bucko. It's his team, his rules. Why not not let him run it the way he sees fit. Let him make those decisions, not a forum bully.

Kinda like you always said when we had a coach the last two years with his media policies with freshman and asst. coach interviews. What was that coach's name? That's right, your buddy Larry Porter.

Justin might not be a Larry Porter. THANK GOODNESS of that.

uh oh

This is why the CUSA restriction is in place. Hugh Freeze is heavily recruiting Memphis for Ole Miss and the BE restriction is obvious.

The restriction does cover a bunch of schools but there's a reason why. As far as I know Taylor was welcome to stay and nobody wanted or asked him to leave.

btiger's way of getting the point across is just a tad harsher than mine. But for the record, I have never been negative of any of Fuente's moves so far.

I have my tickets and will be there to watch Coach Justin's Tigers win. He's got a two year pass from me to show me his way is gonna turn it around.

Still think it's kind of crappy because, let's face it, with a few exceptions, the kid is probably only good enough to play in C-USA, the Sun Belt, the MAC, or what's left of the WAC, but I buy it and hope that was Fuente's reasoning.

Standard protocol, and whether we're playing Mississippi or not they're still a rival. The man is much too busy to sit around and dream up the best possible scenario for Taylor Reed. He's ready to move on with the remainder of the team.

LOL Nothing negative, but you make a post about this to stir the pot. It's his team, his rules. You could always go jump on the Arizona State bandwagon. Let Justin coach the team and you do whatever it is you do.

The folks who are close to the program (or at least claim to be) are staying quiet on this one. Rich Williams orchestrated Ryan's departure and those same folks know exactly how it was handled and the timing of it.

Scott and Taylor Reed have handled a tough situation with nothing but class and deserve to be treated as such. The kid stayed through Spring practice, competed for his own job and never complained.

The only one acting like a hater fool in this thread is pretty easy to figure out.

Fuente is putting the tough restrictions on Reed hoping that he'll reconsider and stay. I like the strategy of Fuente and like others have said, it's his team his rules. If Reed's dad doesn't like it then he can hit the highway. He's only hurting his son, not the UM.

I don't know why so many have a problem with this. Practically every coach and program in America does it all the time.

Doesn't mean its right.

I don't like transfer restrictions at all...but I'm worried if there isn't some sort of chip that smaller programs have...or they become nothing more than farm clubs for elite programs.
