Trying to affix a title to him and then base a decision off of it is silly and, in my opinion, a great example of everything that is wrong with America.
Put it this way, to take his picture down etc is to tell Southerners that they are less American. After all, unity was and is the goal is it not?
Just give it up. You'll never open the eyes of a guilty white liberal yankee. That have nothing to stand on except the CSA running out of ammo, thus having to surrender, and they chalk it up as a great win. It's like losing all your players in a Championship game and then claiming victory. Sure you walked away with the trophy, but only by default.

If you read through this thread you will see that I'm on the side of keeping the photos on display. However, history is littered with defeated armies, not because of their bravery or tactics, but because of a lack of supplies, war material, food, etc.. The Southern Armies of the Civil War are not alone from suffering this plight. In fact, it is a well known strategy of war to cut off an adversaries ability to fight by starving them of both war supplies and food. No?
Lee's march into Pennsylvania leading to Gettysburg had a lot to do with food for soldiers and horses as well as confiscating war material along the way. These factors were probably more important to Lee than any great tactical advantage gained.

I haven't a clue. And I HAVE read your comments in this thread. You'll notice that your rep points went from 31 to 33 because of it

OMG....
The North fought that whole war with one hand tied behind their back. We shouldn't compare war to athletic contests but since you started it. It wasn't a championship game as much as a Varsity squad playing a jr. high team. It totally decimated the south. In the North it was pretty much business as usual even during the war.

See we never should pardoned these dudes. The Union army should still be occupying the south. This is what happens when you let them off the hook.

Please elaborate. Last I read the North had the upper hand in not only manpower but also machinery.

Ummmm, no actually.......... The north outnumbered the South 2:1, had a near endless supply of goods and clothes and weapons and lost twice as many soldiers and the only reason the South surrendered was because they ran out of ammo. Have you ever seen what the Confederates had for weapons and such? The Confederate Army consisted of mainly a bunch of farm boys.

LSU, I think that's what Mach's referring to. The North in a way, "held back" in terms of numbers, and simply let attrition take effect. Yes, some Union generals went on a "scorched earth" process, but for the most part that would IMO have been a minority.

Watch the Ken Burns documentary. It is pretty good. The South's deadliest sin is Pride. The North was never fully engaged in that war. Our Universities continued on. It was like the Iraq War in a sense. The North knew it was happening. Knew people in it but life was pretty normal for the most part. In the South totally the opposite. 100% committed.
