RE: Why is Google celebrating the World Cup?
I like soccer played at its highest level (World Cup). I'll admit I used to hate the sport though. Around here, at least where I go, the sports bar is usually pretty packed for the US games. Even yesterday I had the Watch ESPN thing going so I could catch glimpses of the Brazil/Croatia match on the computer.

lol, I used to hate soccer. But after watching my son play and watching World Cup matches I've come to enjoy the sport. I never played as kid so I still don't understand all the rules though.

WTF is going on today????

This is about the Brazilian government screwing it's people over and them fighting back, and an attempt to find out why Google would celebrate that. But it's clearly over your head, and many others so yeah, even though it's totally political, I guess you might as well relate it to being a sports thread.

Brazil was a terrible choice to host the Cup. For all intents and purposes it is a third world country with unbelievable extremes. The people have a right to be pissed over the money spent on a sport while they starve to death in slums.

There, I'm an extremely conservative American soccer fan, and I stuck to your topic for this post.

At least there will be less controversy at the next two venues in Russia and Qatar!

Google, the world cup, chopsticks, skinny jeans, the NFL, and the NBA...just more proof of the world wide liberal conspiracy

Yes, a lot of young kids play soccer. Lots of them move on to other sports as they get older though.

Meh, I played it as a kid through the program at the Y for about 5 years. It was a great time, but I like all of us, we moved on to more popular sports like football and basketball.

You are actually incorrect. Soccer ranks 4th among child sport particpation.

i am by no means a soccer fan, but I am not dumb enough (like you) to not realize that the world cup is literally the most popular sports tournament in the world.

You own a mac.

Along with 14% of computer owners...what's your point? Are they liberal, too?

Yeh, I realized I was incorrect after posting it, that is why I deleted it. I had misremembered some stats. Its the fastest growing, not most played.

My bad.

When i was in the 1st through 4th grades soccer was the go to sport. maybe 70% of my total graduating class was in it, which is essentially every single kid who would ever play organized sport instead of being a techie. but come 7th grade that number was down to 5%.

Eh, you've always had a problem with me so I don't really care what you think.

I just feel that Google could find something better than an event that's causing a lot of trouble right now. I didn't have an issue with it yesterday, but things have greatly escalated since then, that's why I mentioned it.
