WWF just got a 5 year billion dollar deal (three times their old NBC deal) from FOX.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/f...wn-1113701
It appears FOX and ESPn Plus will be splitting the UFC rights for about 350 million---more than double the current deal (the ESPN portion of this has been finalized).
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/f...wn-1113701
Of interest---NBC did not pick up any new programming. I think they will bid and bid hard for the AAC.
It does look that way.
NBC will make a hard push for pairing games at least on some Saturdays with ND and on non-ND home dates. Using the Olympic sports as a pillar for NBC sports programing to go with golf and a few other pieces they can build around.
CBS and CBS sports look ready to bid solidly on second tier rights with AAC football, AAC basketball/olympics, and some Navy athletics as central pieces to it's line up very similar to what it currently buys from ESPN.
ESPN seems to be being more selective. They passed on the price point for the extra Navy inventory. However I will be surprised though if they or NBC don't pick up the ND game. I expect to see a more mish mash of sports for them mostly ESPN+ or ESPN 3 stuff with options for the main channels.

I keep hearing on this board that there will be AAC football games on NBC to "pair with Notre Dame" if NBC gets the AAC. Sure NBC-SN, but NBC. ?
1. Why is that believed? It's been said since before the current 6 year deal was matched by ESPN. Ive never seen any evidence for that being part of the deal.
2. Is that even allowed? CBS doesn't allow any other conference besides the SEC. Does Notre Dame have a deal with NBC like the SEC CBS exclusive deal?

First, "CBS doesn't allow any other conference besides the SEC." Umm, I've watched ND-Navy on CBS every other year since forever, so you're wrong there.
Second, it is well established that the reason AAC deal with ESPN includes OTA coverage is that that was an aspect of the NBC deal that ESPN matched with their right to match - NBC offered OTA to a dying conference so why wouldn't that be part of the deal for an AAC with a track record of proven ratings on ABC and ESPN?
Third, have you watched NBC or NBCSN on a Saturday? Damn, they need content. They're relying on EPL, and by any cherry picking of soccer you do, AAC vs AAC gets more viewers than EPL.
If you think that ratings/viewers = $$$, then you should believe that NBC will be a bidder for a 2018 AAC that is WAY healthier than the 2013 AAC that they DID bid on.

RE: AAC, Navy, and CBSSN announce...
The info's out there BB if you want to search for it. IIRC, the SBJ originally had the leak and it got picked up by member city papers. I remember reading about it in the CA and Hartford papers among others. Also interviews of the time mentioned network and cable exposure. Where the conjecture about the match comes in is the numbers. Since 3 games are ABC guarantees, it is assumed that NBC offered three as well. It could have been less since ESPN "overmatched," but NBC network exposure was well documented as part of their offer.
ETA: quick search found it easily.
Quote:ESPN, which has had a 33-year business relationship with the Big East, has the right to match the NBC offer but has not yet decided its course of action. If ESPN takes a pass, NBC would pay approximately $25 million a year over the proposed six-year deal for games which will be aired on both NBC and its cable outlet, NBC Sports Network. The NBC deal would kick in at the start of the 2013-14 basketball season and the kickoff of the 2014 football season. The CBS deal, which would cover only basketball, would pay between $2 and $4 million a season.

Again I see a similar outcome this go around. First there is no match clause. ESPN matched the NBC offer that did not have that option.
NBC will take a large chunk of our football and then some Olympic sports probably even some basketball games for NBC sports. Something like first and third pick each week. 1st pick will be paired on Saturdays, with the very best match up games slotted in when they don't have ND. The other choice match ups paired with ND home games. Their third choice option as a tent pole for NBC sports the way CBS sports did with navy. I could see our baseball filling time there in the spring and women's basketball there too.
CBS will offer us some OTA for basketball content maybe a few options for football matchups they think worthy. Second tier basketball games and second pick football will continue on CBS sports with the conference being paid directly. Maybe women's basketball or baseball here as well.
Anything not picked clean will go to ESPN if they can get a reasonable price. Most likely for ESPN+.
This is where I really want to see Aresco earn his money. Getting guarantees of Olympic tournaments and championships on tv not just digital. The exposure and resulting revenue bump is huge for those sports. This is where the A5 are killing us that we will struggle to match. Their networks bring in millions from non revenue sports media rights. These sports and their associated costs drag on budgets. Even little improvements like booster bumps from added exposure will help to make this conference more competitive and cohesive. More media exposure will cause that.

I mostly agree with you on this, but I think you aren't giving UCONN women's basketball rights enough credit for the ratings and prestige they would bring to any secondary outlet. I also can't see ESPN not willing to offer up a decent price to keep AAC games on Thursdays and Fridays and as great filler on slow espn Saturdays. I think contractually they can't just throw a lot of their p5 programming in those slots because of their conference network agreements

As far as ESPN goes they have other filler content that will give them better value than what I think the AAC will cost after CBS and NBC set the price for football/basketball top tier. That doesn't mean they will be in the next contract, that was done last year if I remember right when UConn was really complaining about rights.
It's very possible they keep it. Also very possible it's wrapped up as part of a package, both could have benefits.

It's very possible they keep it. Also very possible it's wrapped up as part of a package, both could have benefits.
It depends. If the league walks away with a 10 million per team paycheck—UConn probably wouldn’t gripe if the UConn women’s basketball rights are included. If the deal is just 4 million—UConn is going to want those rights ( and I think they would have a good point as it wouldn’t appear the league was getting much of anything for them anyway).

I also can't see ESPN not willing to offer up a decent price to keep AAC games on Thursdays and Fridays and as great filler on slow espn Saturdays. I think contractually they can't just throw a lot of their p5 programming in those slots because of their conference network agreements
I think women's basketball and our traditionally strong baseball will be the foundation of our third tier rights with UConn women's basketball being the crowning jewel. I can also see those rights returned to the schools, for UConn as a special bonus.
As far as ESPN goes they have other filler content that will give them better value than what I think the AAC will cost after CBS and NBC set the price for football/basketball top tier. More importantly I see a lot of teams wanting to get away from those week night games and the conference wanting to distance itself from the g4 who play week nights. You might see a few but no where near what has been happening. The fact that NBC and CBS have Saturday needs is another reason I see their offer as being preferred even if the money is close.
FYI--UConn's rights to their womens basketball were returned to them a couple of years ago.
That doesn't mean they will be in the next contract, that was done last year if I remember right when UConn was really complaining about rights.

4 mill.
You would also have a new commissioner, and a big mess.

To be clear—-I don’t think that’s going to happen. I see 4 million as a disappointing worst case scenario. I’m thinking 6-8 million a team.

I do, too. I was just stating that because that kind of situation goes way beyond UConn keeping the WBB separate contract.
