Apples and Oranges my friend....

Baseball team doesn't have to fight huge million dollar SEC TV contracts, pitiful attendance, HUGE rosters where Bama gets 10 of the top 50 players in America, glamour of the "Big 5" football conferences, National TV, AND IN BASEBALL, A PROGRAM LIKE USM HAS A CHANCE TO REALISTICALLY COMPETE FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (not so in football). That's just off the top o' my head..

nobody wants to hear this....however, I don't care about 'nobody'

shiTTTy budget

shiTTTy conferece

shiTTTy leadershite across the board

media dissolution

30 D1 teams added since '70

fewer quality players

shiTTTy lower educational system....still laughing at 'no person left behind'.....

football at southern miss is over as we once knew it......

however, if you enjoy the sport and want to see a handful of diamonds in the rough evolve, that ticket is still available to be had....

Absolutely not! Baseball is the only major sport where we can compete on a national level. Just look at Coastal Carolina, Rice & Fresno State winning the CWS in recent memory. We have the potential to do the same.

As far as football, we have zero shot at being nationally relevant. What’s the biggest accomplishment in our football program’s history? A Liberty Bowl win over Pitt? Please.

Apples & Oranges.

The ceiling is certainly higher for baseball. There’s a greater possibility of competing at a high level.

But if the question is if the football team can match what the baseball program actually has accomplished, I would say it has before and could again.

Uhh, maybe finishing in the Top 20 three times...maybe winning 2 small college national championships when we were playing Bama, FL State, Memphis and NC State, not Delta State, Miss. College or N. Alabama....maybe beating Bama and Brer Bryant and ending their 59 game home winning streak...maybe defeating more top 20 teams than anyone in C-USA combined....maybe destroying TCU's and Houston's run to a BCS Bowl...maybe turning out 2 NFL HOFers....maybe having nearly 20 winning seasons in a row and only a few losing seasons EVER in our history....and I'm too tired to keep a-goin' 04-cheers

Losing attitude like that is why we suck...please.

RE: Can our football team match the SUCCESS that our baseball program has achieved ?
It’s possible football could go on a Boise-esque run, dominating a weak conference, going on a run of 10+win seasons, and knocking off the occasional P5 opponent. Do that, and it can equal baseball’s success, since baseball’s best finish thus far is a #8 final ranking. The G5 “access bowl” bid would have to be the football equivalent of a CWS berth since football’s playoff invites fewer teams, and we’ve come really close to it already.

So until baseball ups its game, yes, it CAN happen. WILL it happen is a totally different proposition.

So 3 Top 20s in nearly 60 years of D1 football. That's like once every 20 years or so. How frequently do we do that in baseball? Every couple years?

(05-30-2018 08:30 PM)eaglebeaver Wrote:  maybe winning 2 small college national championships
I don't dispute we could drop down to FCS and compete for National Titles. But we are talking today's program, which competes in FBS.

A single win over a guy who died nearly 40 years ago? You might as well brag about small college championships from the 50s... Oh wait.

The tallest midget.

(05-30-2018 08:30 PM)eaglebeaver Wrote:  maybe destroying TCU's and Houston's run to a BCS Bowl.
Two examples of programs that have accomplished much more than us and left us in the dust. Both of those teams have played in Access Bowls (i.e., modern day BCS Bowls), so we certainly didn't destroy anything.

(05-30-2018 08:30 PM)eaglebeaver Wrote:  maybe turning out 2 NFL HOFers
Just 1 behind Jackson State.

(05-30-2018 08:30 PM)eaglebeaver Wrote:  maybe having nearly 20 winning seasons
Again, the best of which got us to the Liberty Bowl.

Look, the point is simple:
We have been nationally relevant in baseball.
We will be nationally relevant in baseball.
We can win a National Title in baseball.
^^^NONE of these things are true for football.

Football certainly has a lower ceiling than it used to.

The college football landscape has changed drastically in the past 20 years or so and none of the changes work in favor of schools like USM.
