. . .
But, in respect to Houston and TCU, you are right, Tulsa will never turn into a Houston and certainly not a TCU. . . And, Tulsa does not appear to be investing in their program at a level that would give them any chance to even dream of building their athletic department into something similar. If Tulsa isn't working towards building a new stadium, or preforming a major renovation, paying salaries that will insure a high quality head coach and his staff will want to be there, building an indoor practice facility. . . but you are falling behind other programs that are doing these things.... like North Texas.
Hey, I get that you have to defend your team and your high on the sweet sweet taste of piggy tears at the moment. I agree that Tulsa is unlikely to turn into TCU and we will never have the population or student base of Houston either. But you made statements that are objectively false.
Ps.
N. Texas is my dark horse to sneak into a big bowl. Liberty, UTEP, Old Dominion and Rice should be non factors. UTSA and S.Miss probably are not very good. UAB is meh. You can probably handle FAU. La tech will probably be the key game. But you have a path to get there.
If it is you or UCF/Boise - they will win on brand recognition. It would be interesting to see a 1 loss UCF arguing their tougher schedule should put them ahead of you. Though... because of conference allegiance and respect for long running feuds with UCF fans, I will be cheering them on.
The win over the Hogs is nice, but I'd be defending UNT even if we lost that game. North Texas has a history with Tulsa that goes back to 1957. And, North Texas has a long football history too. We've been playing football for over 100 years, winning over 20 conference titles along the way. We even have an NFL Hall of Famer. So it isn't like Tulsa has done a lot more on the football field.
North Texas does not yet have the budget size of Tulsa, but we have doubled our overall athletic budget over the last decade, despite not earning the media money the AAC affords Tulsa. Has Tulsa's athletic budget doubled in the last 10 years? I see no reason why North Texas won't continue to invest at a higher then normal rate compared to many other universities. Also, I stated you need to pay you head coach and his staff at a level that will make Tulsa more attractive. Yes, Tulsa's head coach makes maybe a little more then our coach. It is hard to say, because what you listed as our coaches salary does not include extra incentives he appears to be earning. But, the important part of the athletic budget numbers that you fail to include are the assistant salaries. North Texas assistant salaries are higher then Tulsa's. As of 2017, North Texas spends $1,335,000 on assistant salaries, while Tulsa spends $786,488.

I visited Tulsa's stadium, back in 2013, when North Texas beat you 42-10. It was okay, but felt small, and it seemed to lack energy and Tulsa fan support. I like the older feel to the place, but your visitor's bathrooms were terrible. What is up with the trough?!!! That was the most inhuman communal toilet I've ever seen. When comparing small private AAC stadiums, I like SMU's Ford better.
Apogee is now about 6 years old, and we have just installed new turf, and are planning to install two new video boards. The locker rooms were just renovated over the off-season. New signage celebrating the history of our program and our players has also been added over the off-season. The stadium is even getting a new Mean Joe Greene statue installed on Sept. 29th before the LA Tech game.
All I'm saying is that if you are not investing in your athletics at a level noticeably higher then North Texas, and if you are not confident Tulsa can beat us on the field, then some of your fans really shouldn't throw stones are way.
Thanks for pulling for us. The schedule looks good for us, but we still have a lot of season to play. Anything can happen.
2 winning seasons in 10 years lol. A North Texas fan with a puffed up chest, ha. NOrth Texas has a good coach. A good coach who is as good as gone after this year. North Texas then returns to being a bottom dweller. Not sure where why you are over here giving “advice”. Good luck with your rare winning season because next year its back to being cannon fodder for better programs. Will take all three of the schools in question over North Texas any day.
ECU is coming off back to back 3 win seasons and you lost to NC A&T to start this season. Those look like bottom feeder results to me.

South: UCF, USF, ECU, Houston, SMU, Memphis
I believe this would helped the conference separate even further from the other G5 leagues. It would have created a north division that would sit in the old big east footprint, which would have UConn and Cincinnati.
I agree that both were bad additions, but army and Marshall would have been just as bad.
I'd rather have stayed at 10
I think Marshall would've been ok as a bottom dwellar with occasionally high upside. Every conference is going to have programs normally towards the bottom, but Marshall explodes every few years for a big season. Basketball would be a concern, but I wonder if dantoni has it moving in a good direction.

I can see SMU going on the rise in a year or two. I think that they are on the right track as of now. Tulsa looks like it will continue to be a stepping stone for coaches and may need constant work to get better. I can see them getting there, however it will take them a lot longer than SMU. Tulane, has to compete with LSU and that is hard. It's in a great city and Louisiana is beginning to be a hot bed for football talent. I do see them on the rise as well.

Has to compete with LSU.....Texas and OU are kind of big deals too.
Tulsa needs a new coach pronto but the frame work and talent is actually there.
SMU is adapting to the new system. Next year might be very similar for them but that third year is looking really good especially if they can stay bowl eligible through the switch.
Tulane continues to put in the work in both football and basketball. It's progress and a solid base to continue to work up. Them getting bowl eligible this year is the next stage.

SMU has been the best team in the AAC west for about a month now.

RE: Can SMU, TULSA or TULANE ever be good at football again?
All three privates would do so much better if they could put together a quality staff and keep them together for a few years.
TCUs ascension was aided by several factors including - a quality staff that has largely remained intact, recruiting and coaching at a high level, and seven years beating up on the absolutely dreadful MWC, where they averaged 11 wins a season. That's gonna build some confidence and a fan base.
Their administration has made smart moves when it comes to Conferences, breaking free from SMU, Rice, and Tulsa to make their own path. They have invested heavily in football and it paid off with a golden ticket to the Big 12. And to their credit, they have remained competitive and relevant in the much more competitive Big 12.
After leaving Cal, Sonny spent a year at TCU observing the program and learning what works there - or at least that were his words. I hope that is true. Because he is a coach who I think "could" be SMUs version of Gary Patterson, minus about 75 lbs. He is recruiting some outstanding players, and working the grad/transfer market very effectively, which usually works quite well with Dallas kids getting homesick.
2019 will be a key year to see if we can get back to a bowl, and see if our grad transfer QB (Shane Buechele) is another Garret Gilbert, or Rafe Peavey, Sonny just landed another transfer Cam'ron Jones. There are always going to be a few highly recruited Dallas kids who just want to come home.
