...just posted the ESPN link... hate it for the Huskies, and hate to see the dude headed to Bama, as an Blazer/Aubie... ...but my Quack side is 'at peace' with it... 03-drunk ...best of luck to the Huskies - it's no doubt a top-tier program, and should have a solid replacement... 04-cheers

Give credit to Joel Klatt of Fox Sports, he was on top of this potential Kalen DeBoer to Alabama news two days ago.

And yet, it seems like a number of coaches have already turned them down.

Lanning apparently did but that's it. DeBoar was the next target and appears to be coming to Tuscaloosa.

Norvell and Sark got big raises thanks to Jimmy but that doesn't mean they were offered the job. In Sark's case, I expect we would've liked him but no one leaves blueblood jobs, even for another blueblood job.

...I'll give a shout-out to Flugaur as well - not a 'journalist', thus pretty beleagured, but he was vehemently denying the Norvell talk from yeaterday, and noted DeBoer was the target... The Fat Guy from Minnesota evidently has a decent 'network' of informants...

Alabama checking account is a little lighter this morning. UW just recouped a year of B1G travel mitigation costs.

And somebody just earned coaching agent of the year award.

Jimmy Sexson is for sure the biggest winner this week. With how quick everything went down, this for sure had to been in the works for sometime.

Stu, you're absolutely on target with regard to Sexton, he made himself and his clients a lot of money this week!

...yeah, it's a bit odd how there hasn't been a 'challenger' to Sexton's monopoly on college HCs, at least in the SEC/ACC... but dude evidently is one of the best...

The idea they'd hire James Franklin is high comedy.

For a guy who's been around CFB a long time, Thamel doesn't seem to understand that money can make those "big buyouts" and "entrenched coaches" not a big deal. Alabama is the Mecca of CFB, they want to keep this incredible 15+ year run going, and money is not a problem. The real problem is following in the steps of Saban but the Tide will get their guy.

"money is not a problem"? There are 10 SEC schools that can and would pay just as much for a coach as Alabama. There's a market, heck, Saban and Kirby set the market. Are you gonna pay Saban's replacement twice as much as you paid Saban? The lure of Alabama is all the talent there right now, and a young/hungry coach might just be cocky enough to think that he could get more out of all that talent than Saban could.

I think it will be Kiffin, or, if not, a hungry young guy like Freeman or perhaps even Willie Taggert.

Well let's see, It won't be Sarkisian. It won't be Smart. Agree with Stever Dabo is behind the times. It won't be the Washington coach because the last time Alabama hired the Washington coach he used the university credit card for hookers in Mobile and never coached a game. Ole Miss seems to exist to lose head coaches to other SEC programs. Ding ding, we have a winner! Plus, Iffy Kiffy keeps his bags packed!

I was looking for a different post in this thread and saw this one that I didn’t notice before. It wasn’t Mobile where Mike Price paid for strippers, it was Pensacola, FL.

No disrespect intended for the women of Mobile, I was just having some fun with Bama. They made a good hire! And Auburn's present coach had a similar track with the cards, only much farther South.

Of course, you never want to be the one who replaces the legend. And unlike Paterno, who wasn’t at or about at the top of his game when he left, Saban is/was.

Also, O'Brien was brought in under unusual circumstances where PSU just wanted a coach whose teams would be competant, but above all else avoid additional scandals for the program for obvious reasons... not like they were eligible for a conference title game or bowl, anyway, his two seasons.

Yeah, only I remember that second year and the fans/Joe-bots being pretty merciless. It got pretty ugly when they lost to Indiana for the first time since joining the conference. I suspect he got on the phone with his agent after that and said "we're done here."

But Alabama will be so much worse. Even before Saban, that was a place still figuring out its place in the SEC and national landscape chasing after a repeat of the Bryant-era times. They got it and more with Saban...it's only going to get worse for someone down there.

For 8 figures a season guaranteed plus endorsements and a nearly unlimited operating budget you realize the only people that care about that stuff are fans that don't like the school, right?

At its worst, it's the all time guaranteed Golden Parachute generational wealth job.

When you are in the same boat, write me a postcard about it. It's not for everyone, and there is no uniform experience. And the "don't be the person who replaces the legend" thing is something extending well beyond athletics. Backfilling any long-time employee or being anyone's successor can be quite hard with that "big shoes to fill" thing. It's typically easier to backfill in a "revolving door" situation, since short tenures and consistent turnover should, eventually, ignite some internal discussion about level-setting and expectations. Of course, for higher education and college athletics? Probably not comparable to the corporate world. Still, imo, side-by-side, Saban started at Alabama at a far better position to succeed than DeBoer.

FWIW, I think the DeBoer move was a great one for both Alabama and the coach. For DeBoer, especially, since he doesn't have to deal with that "coast to coast" issue the Big Ten will soon endeavor as a conference, and the guy goes from one regional conference to another. I think the trajectories of both Lanning and DeBoer are going to be interesting to watch in time. For DeBoer, he has to maintain Alabama as the/one of the alpha dogs of the SEC, where Lanning now has to push Oregon to that level in a far better, harder, and larger conference. I also like how DeBoer, like Saban, "got out from under" the Big Ten thing, even if Washington wasn't yet in the conference. Saban had a ceiling at Michigan State due east in Ann Arbor (and Columbus and University Park), and jumped to LSU after his best season at MSU. DoBoer, had he stayed at UW, would have had that, too, plus the ongoing existential journey at USC.

Quote:"I want to be clear that wasn't the reason, but some of those events certainly contributed," Saban said of his decision to retire. "I was really disappointed in the way that the players acted after the game. You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your ass and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff ... that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program."

Saban also talked about how the way the college football landscape is changing influenced his decision. He estimated that "maybe 70 or 80% of the players you talk to" wanted to know about their playing time for the upcoming season and how much they would be making in NIL money.

Good article from Nick as to why he decided it was time to step away.

P2 has bigger money and bigger headaches to go along with it.
